I Became the Assassin Family's Foster Daughter (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 4
“Th-th, Young Master?”
Anna’s startled voice. Agnes closed her lips again, having barely managed to part them.
“When did you arrive?”
She had come to bring a simple snack, but upon seeing Young Master Deon standing before the child, her heart nearly dropped out of her chest.
“Were you… about to use your ability…? No… that can’t be…”
Anna’s eyes flickered uncertainly between Deon and Agnes.
Only upon hearing the word “ability” did Deon finally address her.
“Are you trying to teach me a lesson, Anna? Since when were you hired as my teacher?”
His tone carried a clear warning not to overstep boundaries.
From him—a mere nine-year-old—she felt an overwhelming, suffocating pressure.
Anna bowed her head.
“I’m sorry, Young Master.”
“That’s enough.”
As he spoke, Deon’s eyes remained fixed on Agnes.
Agnes, in turn, quietly watched him through her hair, her hidden eyes steady.
‘…Pain?’
Then she realized something strange.
Among the emotions in those crimson eyes, one feeling stood out—something she knew all too well.
The boy was in pain.
After enduring it for over a decade herself, she could recognize that familiar, loathsome sensation anywhere.
‘Is it because of the side effects?’
Duke Gerwer had referred to the accumulated energy within ability users as “side effects.”
“Every time I use my ability, I can feel those side effects gnawing away at my life, my Ltiom. If I hadn’t found you, I would have already…”
Agnes shivered involuntarily, recalling those words. It felt as if Duke Gerwer were whispering right beside her.
Meanwhile, seeing her reaction, Deon assumed Agnes was frightened of him. He averted his gaze and turned away.
“U-um…”
Ah, she had wanted to make a good first impression.
Agnes stammered his name, but Deon had no intention of turning back.
Instead, just before leaving the parlor, he spoke to Anna.
[This is the timeline separator]“Wash that one. She stinks.”
Deon’s words to Anna sealed Agnes’s next destination.
Before she could even savor the soft bread—the first she’d eaten in years—Agnes was dragged off to the bath.
In the tub filled with warm water, Anna scrubbed Agnes clean.
“Scrubbed” was more accurate than “washed.”
Her hair had to be lathered and rinsed at least five times, and the bathwater grew so filthy it had to be changed twice more.
Agnes offered no resistance, swaying helplessly under Anna’s hands.
“…Ugh… Ah…”
“Not done yet.”
Afterward, Anna applied moisturizing cream to Agnes’s skin and a glossy oil to her hair.
Once her hair was dried and she was dressed in fresh nightclothes, Agnes looked as if she’d been reborn—soft and pristine.
Overwhelmed by the whirlwind of events, Agnes stood dazed, her expression blank.
“Good heavens! Were you always this adorable?! You?”
Anna, deeply moved by the result of her efforts, pressed her warm cheek against Agnes’s.
And no wonder.
Though it was a pity her tangled hair had to be chopped into a short bob, the clean child before her looked like a fairy straight out of myth.
Moonlight-bright silver hair, snow-white soft skin, and round silver eyes peeking out from beneath her bangs.
“All this time, you’ve been hiding such beauty? My goodness, you’re truly stunning.”
Confused by Anna’s repeated exclamations, Agnes couldn’t understand.
‘Why is she acting like this?’
Trending
Dirty. Smelly. Pitiful.
Throughout her entire life, those were the only words ever attached to Agnes.
Even during the relatively cleaner days at Duke Gerwer’s estate, she’d never heard anything kind about her appearance.
She often heard things like:
“You should be grateful to Duke Gerwer for taking in a filthy commoner like you.”
‘But this person is just being kind—that’s why she’s saying these things to me.’
Even though she probably still didn’t look very good.
Agnes lowered her head deeply.
“……”
“Oh! I’ve been chattering away all by myself, haven’t I? This isn’t the time for that. Let’s go to the parlor. The butler asked me to bring you.”
Anna took Agnes’s hand and started walking.
When they reached the parlor, the butler wasn’t the only one waiting for her.
“Oh, you’re here?”
Jed, whom she’d seen earlier that day, waved.
Seeing a familiar face, she instinctively bowed in greeting, gladness in her heart.
“Oh, hello th—”
“Anna, where’s the little one the master brought?”
She quickly realized the greeting hadn’t been meant for her.
Agnes’s cheeks flushed red with embarrassment.
‘…He wasn’t greeting me.’
“Oh~ Didn’t come together~?”
Jed looked around, completely overlooking Agnes standing right in front of him.
Though his crinkled eyes clearly showed he was joking,
Agnes, barely reaching his waist, had no way of seeing his expression.
“Good grief, Anna. How can you hide a child like that?”
“She’s right here.”
Anna placed a hand on Agnes’s shoulder and fixed Jed with a warning look that clearly said, ‘Don’t you dare tease her.’
Jed flinched and stopped his teasing.
Instead, he grinned and playfully ruffled Agnes’s hair with both hands.
“Got it! You’re right here. Wow, I’m seriously shocked! You went from rolling in dust to walking around like a noble young lady!”
“Uh, um…”
“Gah! Jed Treang! You crazy fool!”
Anna shrieked at the sight of Agnes’s tousled hair.
After all the effort she’d put into making it silky smooth!
Just as Anna grabbed Jed’s wrist—
“Hem.”
The butler, who had been silently standing behind Jed, cleared his throat to announce his presence.
The butler, in his late forties, addressed young Agnes with polite formality.
“I am the butler of House Rodwick. The master informed me that the young lady has no name to be called by.”
“Oh…”
Agnes nodded.
Her only name, ‘Agnes,’ had been given to her by Duke Gerwer.
At her uncle’s house, she’d been called only ‘hey,’ ‘you,’ or ‘vermin.’
“I don’t… have a name.”
Thus, on the carriage ride to House Rodwick, she’d told Duke Blake exactly that—because the ‘her’ of ‘now’ truly had no name.
The butler smiled kindly at Agnes, who seemed like a granddaughter to him, and said,
“If you wish, the master will grant you a name.”
Agnes looked at the butler with puzzled eyes, then nodded.
She didn’t understand why he’d phrased it as ‘if you wish,’ as if giving her a choice.
But if her master offered a name, she would simply accept it.

“Yes. A slave receives whatever name—”
“Good thinking! It’s better to have a new name when starting a new life!”
Jed, who’d been listening nearby, cut in again, interrupting Agnes mid-sentence.
Then, as if talking to himself, he launched into a story no one had asked for.
“Most people in House Rodwick received their names directly from the duke. Why? Because their pasts were full of things they wanted to forget.”
“……”
“A new name… yes, it represents leaving your old self behind and embracing a new life.”
“A new life…?”
Hearing Jed’s words, Agnes found herself murmuring without realizing it.
Jed glanced sideways at her.
A subtle shift had occurred in the child’s eyes. Her silver irises sparkled faintly.
“How about it? Doesn’t that sound exciting to you?”
The child the duke had picked up—
abused by her family, deprived of even basic care, and nearly sold into slavery by them.
Previous children brought to play with the young master always had somewhere to return to, but this child had nowhere else to go. She would stay here.
Jed crouched down to Agnes’s eye level and declared firmly, meeting her gaze.
“I guarantee you this: now that you’re living in this mansion, your life will change from this day forward.”
[This is the timeline separator]“So she’s to receive a name?”
“Yes. She agreed immediately. Probably because of what you said about her being a slave or something.”
In the master’s study,
Blake sat at his desk, speaking with Jed, who stood before him.
He clicked his tongue, displeased by the word “slave” slipping from Jed’s lips.
“Did I ever say I was taking her in as a slave?”
“Not that I recall.”
“Nor do I.”
On the desk lay a sheet of paper with several nameless suggestions—candidates that had floated through Blake’s mind ever since learning the child had no name.
“Choose a pretty one. After washing her up, she turned out absolutely adorable.”
At this, Blake chuckled softly.
He’d already guessed as much even without Jed’s words—her appearance, glimpsed through her tangled hair, had clearly been extraordinary.
“So, what did you find out?”
“Terrible.”
Jed shrugged his shoulders.
The child’s upbringing, as uncovered today, was far worse than he’d imagined.
Her mother, abandoned by the child’s father, had given birth alone on the streets.
With nowhere to go, she’d carried her newborn—caked in dried blood and filth—to her brother’s house.
“Apparently, her mother was half-mad at the time and treated the baby like a monster. So Tamber took charge of raising her—ah, Tamber’s her maternal uncle, the scum who tried to sell her today.”
“I know. Go on.”
“Do you think someone like that raised her properly? He kept his own sister—the child’s mother—as a brothel keeper and only fed the child enough to keep her alive, otherwise neglecting her completely. Once she turned one, he started making her work.”
“One year old? That’s hardly an age to work.”
Blake doubted what he heard, but it was true.
“He rented her out to beggars for money—having a child with them stirred more pity. Once she could speak, he made her do housework too. Oh, and apparently, no one’s raised roosters in that neighborhood for years.”
“What do you mean?”
Jed flicked his fingernail, a wave of disgust crawling up his arm just as it had when he first heard the story from the neighbors.
“Tamber’s beatings started so early each morning they served as the neighbors’ alarm clock. The beatings stopped the day after the child’s mother died two days ago—probably because he’d decided to sell her. Once he saw her as merchandise, he’d want to avoid causing more damage.”
Even while delivering his report, Jed struggled to suppress his inner curses.
Without an order permitting death, he couldn’t end the man’s life—but at the very least, he should’ve left him bedridden for the rest of his days.
While Jed ground his teeth in fury, Blake gazed silently at the paper, lost in thought.
‘Is her pessimistic outlook a product of such a harsh upbringing? And not only that—she’s lived the life of the lowest class, with no proper upbringing whatsoever.’
Yet the child he’d spoken with in the carriage today seemed far more refined than that.

‘But beyond all that, something still feels off.’
And that wasn’t the only suspicious part.
The moment he’d seen her, he’d sensed a subtle shift in the ever-present energy that usually pressed against his lungs with each breath.
But he couldn’t identify what it was. Like a dream upon waking, the sensation had grown fainter with time. Even if he felt it again now, he doubted he could tell if it matched that first impression.
“How can family members treat someone like that? Because they never knew love, all they can say is cold, heartless things like calling her a slave.”
Jed finally let his anger spill out.
Blake lingered on one phrase in particular.
‘A child who doesn’t know love.’
There was already one such child in this mansion.

Kitsune Chapter 18That her presence would be discovered because an ability user was purified — is a serious miscalculation on her part.
At least that will make her discovered sooner by her new family.
Kitsune Chapter 20Oh no! An enemy. How did she get discovered so fast?
