His full name was Kaiden Ulphaz, but he was more often called by his nickname Kai—the son of Hughgray and Chloe—had just turned five months old. The weather had grown pleasantly warm, and Chloe and Hughgray had just taken Kai out for his first-ever trip to Fontaine Forest.

Sir Joyce was pacing uneasily around the three of them lying on the picnic blanket, wearing a deeply dissatisfied expression.

Even though it was summer—posing no risk of Kai catching a cold—and despite assurances that his health was perfectly fine, Sir Joyce remained anxious the entire time.

He fretted that insects might bite him, that even with a blanket laid down, the cold earth beneath the grass could seep into the baby’s body and harm him. He warned that birds flying through the forest might drop droppings on Kai, and since bird droppings contained toxic substances, it could be disastrous. And what else? Oh yes—he’d even claimed wild animal cries might disturb Kai’s nap.

His constant worrying along the way was so excessive that even Chloe, who well knew Sir Joyce’s deep affection for Kai, found it somewhat irritating. Yet there he stood stubbornly under the parasol, having layered no fewer than five blankets beneath the baby, insisting on staying put just to watch over the sleeping Kai.

Sometimes it was truly baffling how someone who loved children so dearly as Sir Joyce had never married yet. Then again, perhaps it wasn’t children in general he loved—but specifically Hughgray’s child.

“Joyce, I told you to go. Come back in two hours.”

“No, I’ll just stand quietly over there…”

“Joyce.”

Hughgray’s voice sharpened.

“Yes, I’ll return in two hours then.”

Sir Joyce bowed his head gloomily, his expression darkening, and walked away from the grassy clearing.

“You know Sir Joyce is just worried about Kai—why must you speak so harshly?”

Chloe scolded Hughgray.

“I don’t like being together.”
