Fury, indistinguishable in its target—whether directed at the beastkin who pursued Chloe or at this old man before him who had tried to hand Chloe over to that creature—rose from the crown of his head down to the tips of his toes, threatening to explode.

But for now, he had to suppress his rage. If he killed this old man, there would be no way to find out who that beastkin was. First, he needed to uncover who had been targeting Chloe.

The old man kept opening and closing his mouth but gave no answer. He had to endure it. He still had to hold on.

At last, the fury coiled deep in his gut burst out as a thunderous shout.

“He is His Majesty Emperor Carcus Traskan.”

The words Hughgray had been waiting for finally spilled from the old man’s startled lips—and at that very instant, Hughgray’s heart plummeted downward. It felt as if his heart had fallen all the way into hellfire, burning fiercely.
