The next day, Chloe was reading a book in the Duke’s study. The Duke, who had told her to stay in the study, was so overwhelmed with tasks that he only occasionally spoke to her, leaving her no choice but to pass the time with a book.

Yet the words refused to sink in. After reading a little, random thoughts would rush into her mind, and each time, she found herself lost in thought, gazing at the Duke’s face.

Does he like me? Does he truly love me? Then why won’t he look at me? Am I the only one curious about that man’s face? Am I the only one who keeps wanting to see him?

Knock knock.

At the sound of knocking, Chloe hurriedly put on the glasses she’d taken off. It was the butler.

“Your Grace, you summoned me?”

“Revise the hiring regulations. Issue a notice that House Ulphaz will now employ female staff as well as male.”

“Ah… yes. May I ask why the sudden change?”

“My wife will soon join the household. Surely the lady of the house will need female attendants.”

“Oh—mistress? Wife?”

The butler’s voice rose, and so did Chloe’s eyes. She nearly dropped the book she’d been holding. Yet the Duke paid her no attention, speaking only to the butler.

“Effective today, the previous regulations are void. Remove the penalty clause as well. Even if violations are discovered later, there will be no retroactive enforcement.”

“Ah, yes. But Your Grace—does this mean you intend to marry? Are you perhaps planning to wed Lady Tilbeth, who is currently staying here?”

Chloe couldn’t help but frown.

“Tilbeth? Ah… come to think of it, when did that woman say she’d be leaving? It’d be best if she left soon.”
