A personal attendant.

Leina had been closely watching the duke’s personal attendant. He was pressed right up against the window, peering outside as if trying to stick his whole face through it. He hadn’t seemed like this earlier, but now his face was deathly pale, clearly in poor condition.

Tsk tsk, at this rate, is proper conversation even possible?

“Attendant, what did you say your name was?”

“Klein Reeden.”

“I am Leina Tilbeth. Remember that. But tell me, are you unwell?”

“No, it’s just that I suffer badly from motion sickness.”

“Oh… I see.”

Originally, she had brought this attendant along intending to coax information from him about the duke’s mate—the reason being that his body reeked powerfully of the duke’s pheromones. Specifically, the potent mating pheromones emitted by a male in rut.

She was certain he’d entered the room where the duke had spent the night with his mate. Or, alternatively, he might have been present in the same space as the two of them. Though honestly, both possibilities sounded rather odd.

At least when she’d first encountered him on the landing, it had seemed plausible—he might have just stepped out of the duke’s chamber. Yet even after considerable time had passed since then, the duke’s pheromones still clung thickly to the attendant’s body.

If the scent remained this strong even now, it meant the initial exposure must have been overwhelming—a flood of pheromones released unconsciously at peak sexual desire, or perhaps deliberately marked out of excessive possessiveness.

But neither scenario made sense. How could the attendant have been saturated so thoroughly in the duke’s scent without direct physical contact? What exactly had transpired in that room between the duke and his mate?

If she entertained another possibility, perhaps this attendant was intimately close not only to the duke but also to the duke’s mate. That would explain how he’d absorbed both the pheromones the duke emitted directly and those transferred onto his mate.

Whichever was true, this attendant clearly knew exactly what kind of woman the alpha’s mate was.
