The Duke, riding on horseback, and Chloe, once again alone in the carriage with Sir Joyce, were just passing through Arne. The carriage seemed about to stop when the Duke opened the door and spoke.

“Klein, we should stay overnight at the inn in Arne.”

Chloe, half-asleep from motion sickness, snapped wide awake. Could it be—the “Dog and Cat’s Night” inn in Arne?

“What time is it?”

“It’s past four in the afternoon. Staying the night seems best.”

They’d already been delayed before setting off with Sir Joyce, and though they’d eaten shortly after departure, it was already four in the afternoon.

That was strange. She’d expected it to be around two, at the latest.

Normally, when returning from vacation, they’d leave Vorgen around noon the day before, stay overnight at Arne’s “Dog and Cat’s Night,” and head to Roizen early the next morning.

It was a long journey, and she needed time alone—and a private space to change out of her disguise—before returning.

But that wasn’t the only reason.

There was a pass along the road from Arne to Roizen rumored to be haunted by bandits.

When heading from Roizen to Vorgen for vacation, they passed through the pass in broad daylight, so it was safe. But returning from Vorgen to Roizen without staying overnight in Arne meant they’d reach that area just as darkness fell.

In winter, night fell even earlier, so they always stayed at that inn.

If it was already around four now, they’d pass through the pass well past six. Staying in Arne was indeed the wiser choice—and since their employer was traveling with them, arriving back a day late was acceptable.

The problem was precisely that—the employer was traveling with them.
