No matter that he was the master of the imprint and bound to her, no matter that he felt he might go mad with wanting her—he still had to wait. Until she chose to tell him herself.

But right now, even hoping she would accept him felt like a luxury. He didn’t care if she rejected him; all he prayed for was that she would just wake up.

He had to remove her wig to check for any possible head injuries, and to treat the bruises covering her body, he’d had to undress her. He wanted to tear out the eyes of the physician who’d seen her. He had to restrain himself—he was an imprinted wolf, not a mad beast.

Beneath the wig lay her luxuriant, dazzling golden hair, and despite the bruises marring her body, her form was so flawlessly perfect it stole his breath away.

Seeing her battered body stirred a storm within him—fury at himself for failing to protect her, mixed with dizzying awe at her indescribable beauty.

Was there any creature more beastly than himself? How could he feel such dizzying desire for a woman who’d lost consciousness and lay in such a state?

He knew it was a near-reflexive physical reaction toward his imprint, yet he couldn’t shake the shame of feeling like a worthless, lust-driven wretch.

Ashamed of his own carnal urges, he pulled the blanket—already covering her shoulders—all the way up to her neck.

Even though she’d already been dressed in fresh clothes and nothing of her body was visible.

“Klein, Chloe… please wake up. Open your eyes.”

Hughgray murmured beside her bed like a prayer.

Her face looked so peaceful, as if she were merely sleeping—then why wouldn’t her eyes open? Could it be she didn’t want to wake up? Was she trying to escape reality?

If that were true, then perhaps his earlier decision—to pretend he didn’t know she was Chloe until she accepted him—had been wrong all along.

In truth, at first, when he’d learned Klein was Chloe, he’d been angry. She’d stood right beside him all along, watching him desperately search for “Chloe,” yet kept lying and hiding the truth.

But after spending an entire day holed up at the Borgen inn during her vacation, lost in thought, he’d come to understand her situation.
