Marcus, who had been standing with his back to the door, couldn’t even lift his head and simply bowed his body, stepping aside. Without the Emperor’s permission, no one dared raise their eyes.

Ines also moved to show proper respect. But Carson stomped forward in just three heavy steps and stood right before her. He had reached out both hands to grasp her face, but seeing the fine cuts scattered across her cheeks, he hesitated and frowned instead.

“What on earth happened?”

As he spoke, Carson glanced at her garments, which had slipped far down her shoulders for treatment. Then he gave a quick, sidelong look at the physician standing nearby.

“You may leave.”

At his words, Marcus backed out without even raising his head. Feeling somehow that Marcus shouldn’t be seen, Ines quickly added,

“It’s nothing—just a few minor wounds, as you can see.”

“A few minor wounds?”

The group that had followed the Emperor quietly withdrew. Soon, only the two of them remained in the treatment room.

Carson carefully examined Ines’s face and body, then gently pulled up the garment draped over her arm.

“Are you thinking I’m a troublemaker again?”

Her voice was so cheerful that he froze in place. Every time she spoke in that unfamiliar tone, Carson’s heart pounded loudly, announcing its presence. His golden eyes fixed directly on Ines.

“No, I was just thinking you’re an incredibly bold servant—disobeying a direct order to come to the Imperial Palace.”

Ines let out a soft chuckle.

“Now I’ve added another offense.”
