At his playful remark, Ines let out a soft chuckle. As the capital was located in the heart of the empire, its winter was milder than that of other territories. The flowers still in bloom rendered the change of seasons almost meaningless.

The beautiful garden unfolding beyond the window and she herself seemed like a single painted scene.

The still yet vivid moment strangely always made his heart beat a little faster.

“What’s the matter?”

Her green eyes, brimming with laughter, finally turned toward him. He merely shrugged his shoulders.

Though he pretended nonchalance, Carson had been breathless the entire time—even now, as they carried on this trivial conversation.

“Well… perhaps it’s just a time that isn’t flowing smoothly.”

She was as untouchable as a masterpiece within arm’s reach—just like a painting, Ines too could not be touched.

Soon, the capital would be thrown into turmoil over the matter of the Swenden family becoming the lords of Landhill. Today’s scheduled council meeting would undoubtedly center on that very issue. Merely thinking about enduring hours of debate already gave him a headache.

“Ines.”

When he called her name with solemnity, she completely looked up from her documents and met Carson’s gaze. The moment their eyes locked, their hearts raced toward each other as if competing.

Ines took a deep breath. She began seriously wondering whether she ought to arrange a separate workspace.

Though he was acting idle for the moment, Carson had been busy nonstop. Ever since moving into the imperial palace, he’d been overwhelmed with duties so heavy he hadn’t slept properly for days. The more burdened he became, the more Ines threw herself into her work—because she wanted, even slightly, to be of help to him.
