How to Turn a Kind Savior into an Emperor (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 9
Meanwhile, Carson took the child, and the guard standing right in front of him tightly embraced her.
He felt an indescribable emotion at the sight, but ignored it and first checked on his younger sibling.
“Louis, your older brother is here. It’s alright now. Everything’s fine.”
Holding his sobbing sibling tightly, he quickly began to tidy up the surroundings.
Holding his sibling close, he immediately left Lusonia and headed straight for his own territory, Landhill.
Because of the woman who had claimed in the square to be a maid from House Swenden, Carson now knew that the woman lying unconscious in his mansion bed was the only daughter of Marquis Swenden.
The sudden, unexpected visit of the new lord due to the unforeseen incident threw the nobles of Landhill into utter panic.
Entering the empty mansion, Carson immediately sent a detailed letter through the maid who had been with Ines.
He added that although she was currently receiving treatment and her life was not in danger, he would not permit Marquis Swenden to visit. Then he promptly locked the mansion.
After the commotion had passed, silence settled over the mansion along with the darkness. He sat by his sibling’s bedside, staring silently for a long while.
Only after brushing the child’s hair back did he realize his own body was trembling uncontrollably. Though a full four years had passed, his sibling hadn’t changed much.
He felt both joy and heartache at the sight. As a child, Louis had been slow to walk and speak. Had this child failed to grow simply because they’d been waiting for him all this time?
Given how the child never easily let anyone near, how much must they have suffered?
The trembling that began once he was certain Louis was safe barely subsided, even after the physician came and confirmed there were no issues beyond minor abrasions.
If not for that unknown woman today, his sibling would have surely died.
Carson still didn’t properly know the name of the woman who had saved his sibling. Perhaps.
‘Ines… Was it Ines Swenden?’
The woman who had caused chaos on horseback was captured on the spot. She was a commoner named Léna Marière.
He hadn’t met her yet, but according to the knights, she was heavily drugged and kept babbling nonsense.
After touching his sibling’s forehead once more, Carson rose to go see the daughter of Marquis Swenden.
Entering the room where Ines lay, he lit a single lamp, pushing back the pitch-black darkness slightly.
Though it was clearly just sleep after treatment, Carson felt breathless again at the sight. With her eyes closed, she looked far younger than when he’d seen her in the square that afternoon.
He rubbed his dry hand against his bare throat and carefully sat down beside her. Suddenly, her eyebrows shot up and then fell again. Slowly, her eyelids lifted.
“Are you feeling more alert now?”
He spoke, but Ines gave no reply.
“Lady Swenden?”
Worried she might have some complication from her head injury, Carson quickly stood to call the physician—but froze in place at the voice that immediately followed.
“I’m fine.”
Relieved by her clear tone, Carson sat back down.
“This is my mansion.”
“Yes, I know.”
Ines neither glanced around nor strained to recall recent events. Without effort, she remembered clearly how she’d saved Carson’s sibling and how he’d reached out his hand, asking her to walk ten steps together.
It felt like divine revelation, and she knew she would never forget those moments for the rest of her life.
When Ines tried to sit up, he gently urged her to stay still in a low voice.
“It’s still too soon to move.”
Despite Carson’s words, she stubbornly shifted, so he came closer and propped a pillow behind her back.
“Thank you.”
“Is there anywhere you feel uncomfortable?”
“Please lower your voice, Your Highness.”
“I’m no prince here. I’m merely the lord of this territory and a count.”
In the Keinz Empire, nobles never spoke informally to one another as a rule. But since he was royalty, it was only right that he spoke plainly to Ines.
“Becoming a count doesn’t make you any less royal.”
Her tone was remarkably composed—unbelievable for someone who’d seemed dead to the world just moments before.
“For now, your recovery comes first. We can discuss that matter later.”
Seeing Ines nod, he walked to the window, drew back the curtain, and opened it slightly.
“If you feel cold, tell me right away.”
Ines stared at him without answering. Meeting her unguarded gaze, he continued.
“The physician said your injuries were severe, but everything’s been treated. Still, you lost a great deal of blood.”
Moonlight poured in behind him as he turned from the window. Ines thought it suited him perfectly.
“They stitched your wound with many needles. For now, your hair won’t grow back along the line from the base of your skull downward.”
Trending
“Yes.”
“Your shoulder and arm were also badly injured. You won’t be able to use your left arm for a while.”
“Yes.”
“And your ankle…”
Their eyes briefly turned toward her foot.
“The physician said a few days of rest should be enough for you to walk without issue.”
He couldn’t take his eyes off her foot. He recalled her appearance in Konero Square—limping toward him. That moment haunted his vision all day, unforgettable in every detail.
“Yes.”
The moment their eyes met as she answered, Carson felt a strange unease. Yet he couldn’t pinpoint its cause at all.
He couldn’t even judge whether this conversation felt natural under the circumstances. She simply carried an uncanny air that unsettled those around her.
“By the way, Your Highness.”
“Just call me Count.”
“Yes, Count Raymond. Where is my maid now?”
“She’s been sent back to the Swenden residence.”
“Was she injured?”
“No.”
“Oh, then what became of the woman on horseback?”
“That woman…”
For the first time while speaking of her, Carson thought he saw emotion flicker across Ines’s face. Until now, she’d shown complete indifference—even when told about the wound on the back of her head or whether she’d walk properly again.
“I’ve locked her in the mansion’s underground chamber. Her identity hasn’t been properly confirmed yet.”
“You don’t intend to release her soon, I assume?”
“Of course not.”
Ines nodded. If Léna’s delirious mutterings—spoken while not in her right mind—were true, then the current lord of Lusonia was clearly behind this.
If she could prove that Count Graeham was orchestrating an assassination attempt on royalty, it would give Ines a powerful weapon indeed.
“May I speak with her later?”
“For what… reason?”
Ines, eager to see Léna, bit her lower lip in regret. It was only natural that suspicion and caution filled Carson’s eyes as he looked at her. Yet releasing Léna like this was absolutely out of the question.
“Just… curiosity.”
“Do you know her?”
“Who?”
“The woman imprisoned underground.”
“How could I?”
Ines’s large eyes rolled slightly—she found it hard to lie directly under his gaze.
Seeing him frown faintly, she decided she needed to get out of this situation immediately.
“Ah…”
Pretending a headache, Ines pressed a hand to her forehead and tilted her head to one side. The corner of Carson’s mouth twitched upward.
Watching her clumsy acting, he grew certain the woman before him knew something. Her movements in the square had shown no hesitation—as if she’d foreseen the enraged horse charging at his sibling.
“What’s wrong?”
“I feel a little dizzy.”
“Is that so?”
“Yes.”
“Then I’ll call the physician.”
“I’d appreciate that.”
Carson rose without hesitation and walked toward the door. Just as he was about to leave, he turned back to her, still holding the doorknob.
“I’ve informed Marquis Swenden of everything. You needn’t worry about that. And Lady Swenden, you won’t be allowed to leave this mansion until you’ve fully recovered.”
Without waiting for a reply, he left the room at once. Seeing him state not that she should stay, but that she couldn’t leave, Ines easily realized she was imprisoned here—just like Léna.
A week had passed since the incident, yet Léna had confessed nothing. She merely repeated that she’d been drugged, ran without thinking, and ended up in the square—claiming she’d acted while not in her right mind. Everyone who’d attacked Carson that day was dead. There must have been survivors, yet all he’d heard was that they’d died in custody.
They’d searched thoroughly, but found no identifying marks on the attackers. It wasn’t easy for Carson, new to this territory, to fully grasp the current state of the mercenaries operating within it.
He’d also looked into Ines, but aside from being the marquis’s only daughter, there was nothing remarkable about her. Judging solely by her background, Ines Swenden was utterly, unremarkably ordinary.
“She’ll be here soon.”

When the head butler said Ines would come to the study shortly, he nodded and walked toward the study window.
‘Ines Swenden, Ines Swenden…’
He tapped his fingers against the windowsill, then turned at the knock on the door—and met the eyes of the woman who entered.
She gave a slight curtsy in greeting and slowly approached him. In that moment, he finally understood the source of the unease he always felt when looking at her.
“You said you were twenty?”
Carson didn’t acknowledge her courtesy and went straight to questioning her. Asking a noble lady her age clearly breached etiquette.
Though he used polite speech because they were both nobles, he was royalty to the core—and thus his question didn’t feel strange at all.
“Yes, that’s right.”
