Yet as the horse began to pick up speed, the people standing nearby let out short screams and stepped back.

Ines immediately spotted the rider and started running frantically. Pushing through the crowd, she locked eyes head-on with Lenna, who was mounted on the horse. A strange glint briefly flickered in Lenna’s eyes, but she soon charged forward toward the same goal as Ines.

‘I have to save her.’

Even if her body were torn apart and she could never walk again, Ines knew she absolutely had to save this child.

Saving his sister was the only way she could repay, even slightly, the savior who had once reached out a hand to her. For this reason, Ines even felt as though she had traveled back twelve years through time.

But forcing her way through the tightly packed crowd was no easy task.

At first, stunned by Ines’s sudden action, Susan stood frozen, unable to move—but soon she came to her senses and followed after her. Being shorter than Ines, Susan slipped ahead through the gaps between people, clearing a path as she shouted:

“Make way! Step aside!”

With Susan’s help, Ines finally broke through the crowd and saw the little girl’s face beaming brightly as she looked toward her older brother. And right behind her was Lenna’s face, charging like a mad bull.

Just as the maid guarding the child let out a sharp shriek and leapt aside, Ines lunged toward the girl instead.

The instant she thought she’d grasped the child’s small shoulder, an excruciating pain engulfed Ines’s body. Yet without hesitation, she wrapped the girl’s head tightly in her arms with her whole body.

The horse Lenna rode reared its hooves high into the air and immediately trampled over her. Then, bucking wildly once more, it crushed her ankle underfoot.

Terrified by the familiar pain to the point she could barely breathe, Ines still refused to loosen her grip on the child even slightly.

Nearby guards must have stabbed the enraged horse, for it collapsed straight to the ground without even bending its legs. Lenna fell from the horse as well and was quickly bound by the guards.

Gasping for breath, Ines immediately assessed the situation. First, she checked on the safety of the girl in her arms.

“Are you all right, Your Highness?”

When Ines asked the child politely, the girl—who had been clutching Ines’s collar tightly and curled up like a fetus—lifted her face. Though her body trembled violently, she faintly nodded upon meeting Ines’s green eyes.

“It’s all right now. Please don’t worry.”

Assured the child was safe, Ines glanced around. Though the scene was chaotic like a battlefield, she felt the area was secure enough, so she rose to her feet while still holding the girl.

The girl was slightly too big for a twenty-year-old woman to lift comfortably, but Ines hoisted her up anyway.

Her mind, hardened by years of grueling labor, made lifting the child in such an extreme situation feel like nothing at all. As her body rose, the girl instinctively wrapped her arms more tightly around Ines’s neck and clung on.

“Shh, it’s okay. Don’t worry. You’re truly safe now. We must go to His Highness the Crown Prince.”

The princess nodded at Ines’s soothing words but still couldn’t bring herself to lift her face. As she stood fully upright, the neatly tied red hair ribbon on the girl’s head slid softly to the ground.

Ines bent down to pick it up. Clutching the ribbon tightly in her hand—as if losing it meant losing the child herself—she turned toward Carson.

Carson was engaged with enemies who had appeared out of nowhere. A heavily laden cart had been struck by arrows and, pushed down by the men’s forceful strength, lay completely overturned on the ground. The impact sent clouds of dust rising like the remnants of flame.

Watching them, Ines began moving slowly toward him, her ankle throbbing with intense pain.

A fleeting thought crossed her mind—that she might lose her ankle again, just as she had in her previous life—but it didn’t matter.

That ankle was nothing.

Her heart was already too fractured to covet something that had never truly belonged to her.

After taking about three steps, she felt blood trickling steadily from her head where it had hit the ground. A hollow laugh escaped her. Was she going to die again like this? But she had saved Carson’s bloodline—perhaps this death would be worth something after all.

Feeling her lifeblood draining from her body, she began reciting a Bible verse as precious as her own life:

“He who desires too much… shall return empty-handed. He who desires too much shall ultimately… ultimately…”

Murmuring the scripture mixed with deep sighs, Ines took one step at a time toward him.

As everything around her grew dim, only his figure remained sharply etched into her vision, as if carved by a blade.

His strong arm swinging a sword, his gaze constantly wavering with worry for his sister, the relief in his eyes upon confirming she was alive, and the way he lifted his foot toward the last enemy while exhaling roughly.

And above all, Carson von Raymond’s unique aura—unfailingly trailing behind him, shining only for him.

That white light seemed so much like the path to heaven that a faint smile naturally graced Ines’s lips.

“Ultimately… he shall return empty-handed.”

Shaking her head to steady her dizzying vision, Ines gathered the child once more into her arms and kept walking, step after step.

She distinctly felt the same sensation that had overtaken her body on the day she’d been crushed to death by a carriage.

‘Ah… I still haven’t recovered your portrait yet…’

Overwhelmed by the terror of death, Ines instinctively knew she had to move closer to him.

It was a blind, magical compulsion she’d cast upon herself to survive this cruel world.

People’s voices shouting at her and the child kept fading into a hazy mist.

In the silent, white darkness where no sound reached her, only the man running toward her remained vividly clear.

Carson saw the mad horse charging toward his sister, yet he couldn’t rush to her side—the enemies who had suddenly emerged from somewhere had completely surrounded him and those nearby.

Watching the horse charge at his sister with unmistakable murderous intent, he felt despair, rage, and helplessness all at once.

As he dodged an arrow flying straight at him and cut down the enemies around him one by one, Carson saw a golden-haired woman leap toward his sister.

And he watched as she gathered his sister into her arms.

Even as he fought off the enemies, Carson kept glancing back. He saw the thin, frail-looking woman lift his sister and rise to her feet.

Confirming that his sister, Luigianne, was nodding while clinging tightly to the woman’s neck, he kicked down the last remaining foe and immediately plunged his sword into the man’s stomach.

But as Carson quickly turned to go to his sister, he froze in place as if rooted to the spot.

Thump-thump. An inexplicable heartbeat pounded violently in his ears.

The woman holding Louie was clearly someone he’d never seen before in his life.

Yet strangely, she didn’t feel unfamiliar at all. And suddenly, he began to feel an unexplained suffocation.

His sister was safe.

That much was obvious just from how firmly the girl clung to the woman’s body. So this choking sensation tormenting him wasn’t fear of possibly losing his sister.

He tried once more to push forward toward Louie—but the moment he saw the woman slowly walking toward him, his throat tightened, and he found himself unable to move again.

Limp… limp… limp…

In that instant, the woman’s limping gait somehow struck him as perfect in itself. Though he’d traveled the world and seen countless beautiful works of art, he’d never once dared to call any of them “perfect.”

Yet right now, the sight of this woman—her face entirely stained with blood, unable to walk properly—held him utterly captive, unable to budge.

Just then, the delicate woman staggered once. Seeing this, Carson began to run.

He was seized by a strange feeling—as if the mere thirty paces between them stretched into an entire lifetime.

She eventually sank to the ground but didn’t collapse unconscious.

No—he couldn’t be certain she hadn’t lost consciousness. After all, her eyes held no focus at all as she looked toward him.

Carson approached slowly and extended his hand. Glancing toward the spot where guards had blocked off the crowd at the roadside, he said:

“Take my hand. Just ten more steps, and we’ll reach a safe place.”

In that instant, light filled the woman’s eyes, and her resolve hardened.

Without hesitation, she intertwined her hand with his.

Despite her frail and injured body, she swiftly lifted the child into her arms. The effortless motion made Carson feel as if time itself had momentarily stopped.

When he regained his senses and reached out to take Louie from her, neither his sister nor the woman wanted to let go. The child, catching a glimpse of her older brother, burst into tears immediately—but didn’t loosen her grip around the stranger’s neck.

Then the woman, her hand stained with blood, laced her fingers tightly with his. Suddenly, blood surged once more from somewhere in her body and streamed straight down her face.

Her slender hand, slipping as she gripped him, couldn’t fully grasp his thick fingers and kept sliding away—so Carson instinctively squeezed her fingers tighter between his own.

She flinched in pain and tried to pull back, but he pressed forward without leaving the slightest gap, gripping her firmly.

Her outstretched fingers never reached his knuckles, turning pale as they hovered in midair. Carson tightened his hold to help her move.

She let out a deep sigh, gave a faint smile, and matched her steps to his. Then she began murmuring softly:

“…Give all you have. But… he who desires too much shall ultimately return empty-handed.”

Her words—sounding like both a prayer and a spell—vanished completely into the surrounding clamor.

And after taking exactly ten steps, she collapsed on the spot and lost consciousness.

Regret With All Your Might (Completed Main Story)

Male lead Asks for a Divorce Every Day

It’s not often you come across a plot like this in the female-dominant genre — make sure to check it out!

This is a novel I’m planning to reread as well.

The male lead is strong, skilled in martial arts, and not the usual fragile type you often see in matriarchal novels.

Meanwhile, the female lead is a scientist—rational and logical. Even when she falls for the male lead, she doesn’t let her emotions cloud her decisions.

If you push through the first few chapters, you’ll gradually find the story really intriguing.

It has a mix of mystery, detective elements, and romance.

The author’s writing style is like crafting a puzzle—except they deliberately leave out a few pieces, making it hard to predict what happens next, yet keeping you hooked.

In the end, everything will come together and be explained.

One-sentence summary: Wife, stop playing with beakers and look at me!

In a laboratory accident, research scientist Zhu Wansheng accidentally travels to a matriarchal world. The original owner of the body is an eighteen-year-old only daughter of a wealthy rouge merchant, already married with a handsome young man.

Zhu Wansheng grins: Nice! She always said she was heaven’s favorite granddaughter. After a life of toil in her previous life, she can enjoy blessings in this one.

However, her joy lasts no more than three seconds as bad news arrives: the original owner’s family is about to go bankrupt, and her husband wants a divorce.

Even worse, she’s stuck with a research system full of restrictions.

Zhu Wansheng: ? Is this the destiny of a research dog?

——

Faced with this mess, Zhu Wansheng pours herself a bowl of wine to drown her sorrows. In her drunken haze, her husband arrives.

His figure is imposing, holding a long sword, with a dignified air that captivates Zhu Wansheng.

Gu Yingqing, however, looks at the alcohol-reeking Zhu Wansheng with undisguised disgust and coldly asks, “Divorce or not?” The intoxicated Zhu Wansheng mumbles vaguely, “I think… it’s not… it’s not… impossible!”

——

The next day, after sobering up, Zhu Wansheng is full of energy, rolling up her sleeves ready to make a big move. As for yesterday? She has no memory of it.

Zhu Wansheng is ambitious; a research dog fears nothing!

Upgrading rouge, extracting fragrances, producing perfumes, researching lipsticks… all shall bow to the power of modern technology!

The original owner’s dying rouge shop is revitalized. Her mother is pleased and with a wave of her hand, passes on the family business to her. As she takes control and her experimental results gain popularity, it’s the pinnacle of her life…

——

But there are always those who can’t stand to see her doing well. Jealousy, scheming, assassination attempts – they want nothing less than her life.

The person who has always kept his distance from her suddenly holds her tightly in his arms, eyes full of concern.

She is unharmed, but he falls into a pool of blood…

Zhu Wansheng feels guilty, “I can grant you one wish.”

Gu Yingqing tentatively circles his arms around her, carefully resting his head in the crook of her neck, pleading softly, “I regret it. Can we not divorce?”

Zhu Wansheng: ? When did I agree to a divorce?

[Small Theater]

The newly developed rouge is beautifully packaged, and Zhu Wansheng is eager to try it.

Gu Yingqing suddenly appears: “My lady, may I apply it for you?”

Cool fingertips lightly brush her lips. His Adam’s apple bobs as he leans in for a light bite.

Zhu Wansheng: ?

Gu Yingqing: It smells so good, I wanted to taste it…

On a warm spring day, Zhu Wansheng tries a new perfume: “Spring Night.” Gu Yingqing corners her against a wall.

Warm breath lingers on her neck.

“My lady, from now on, may I test the fragrances for you?”
