Sharing bread in Romfield was not something just anyone could do.

Ines had also received a hard loaf from her before. Whenever Ines missed a meal because Jemerrin had dragged her off for a severe beating, Charlotte would save a little of her own portion, hide it away, and then force-feed it to Ines.

‘Still, you must live,’ she had said back then. So now it was Ines’s turn.

“Yes, I’ll be your friend.”

“Thank you.”

As Ines walked away from her, she suddenly turned to look back. Charlotte was bowing her head, speaking softly to her own belly—perhaps proudly telling her mother that she’d made a new friend.

She didn’t know when or how the death of Charlotte’s husband, who bore an unusual surname, would come. Perhaps Charlotte would have to return to Romfield again this time. Yet even so, Ines wanted to help her preserve the person she was now.

When she arrived at the place where the rabbit hunt had been held, there were fewer people than before. Spotting the maid who had been with Louie, Ines approached her.

“Where is Her Highness?”

“She went in there to look for the white rabbit.”

Though Louie wasn’t visible, there was no real cause for concern. Even if the woods were occasionally dense, most of the area consisted of low grass—and with a white rabbit, there would surely be people chasing after Louie. Besides, the boundaries of the hunting ground were clearly defined.

Nevertheless, Ines set off along the forest path to find Louie.

She had walked quite a distance, yet still saw no sign of the child. Tilting her head toward the sky, she saw light glinting through the leaves in the shape of a cross. Just as Ines, squinting against the sunlight, turned her head forward again—

“Your Highness?”

Louie stood straight in the middle of the path, and in front of her, a man was crouching. He was brushing dust off Louie’s dress with his hands. Recognizing who he was, Ines sprinted toward Louie with all her might.
