When Ines turned to look for the jacket she’d worn over her clothes, he picked it up from the floor first. But his situation was no better.

The jacket, too, was soaked with water and had even rolled across the muddy ground—far from wearable again.

“Hurry up.”

Ines glanced back and forth between her own clothes and the shirt he offered, then reluctantly took it from him.

“I’ll turn around…”

But his words vanished into thin air—because Ines had already begun unbuttoning her clothes with casual flicks.

“Lady Swenden?”

He raised his voice slightly to call her name, and Ines looked up at him.

“What are you doing right now?”

Startled for a moment, Ines bit down hard on her lower lip in dismay and quickly turned away.

During her ten years at Romfield, she’d changed clothes without a second thought in front of anyone. No matter how many times she’d been embarrassed since then, how could she make such a blunder now?

Just because her shell had changed didn’t mean all 4,568 of Romfield’s ingrained habits had vanished.
