“Close your eyes.”

At Carson’s soft, quiet command—spoken through the small gap between his hand and ear—her eyelashes, shadowed by moonlight, fluttered shut.

Strangely, he felt the moment her lashes closed more vividly than the chaotic scene unfolding before his eyes.

Distracted by a sudden, odd sensation, Carson glanced downward and noticed the hem of Ines’s green dress peeking slightly out from beneath the curtain.

Slowly, he reached out and gently pulled the fabric of her dress toward himself. In doing so, her thigh accidentally brushed against the back of his hand.

Startled, he looked toward Ines’s shoulder, but she showed not the slightest sign of disturbance.

Though he was clearly only touching the fabric of her dress and not her body itself, he felt as if he were committing something improper. Yet, he couldn’t bring himself to loosen his grip on the garment.

At that moment, the voices of the two people resumed.

“Joseph, you do know, don’t you? That for a commoner like you to become a viscount is utterly impossible—even if you died and came back to life.”

‘Viscount?’

Carson’s brow furrowed at the unbelievable words.

“Do you think I don’t know that?”

“That’s exactly why I’m telling you to understand clearly just what kind of favor you’re receiving right now.”

With unmistakable contempt in her tone, Joseph roughly lowered the woman onto the sofa and immediately claimed the space above her. Then, in a voice firmer and clearer than ever before, he declared,

“That’s precisely why I’m trying to die and come back to life now, isn’t it?”
