“According to the log, around ten o’clock a maid delivered simple bread and tea to stand in for a meal.”

Carson squeezed his eyes shut once, then opened them again, feeling as though his blood had run cold. Before his eyes flashed an image of someone swinging the knife with intent to attack Ines.

Carson lifted the teacup Ines had drunk from and sniffed it. His hands trembled so badly he had to take several deep breaths to steady himself.

Soon, the maid who had last seen Ines entered the office.

The moment she stepped inside, the maid dropped flat onto the floor.

“Your Majesty.”

“Confess everything that happened with the Empress last night.”

“Ah—last evening, a servant came and told me I was to attend to Her Imperial Majesty.”
