How To Choose A Knight (28 Chapters Left to Complete) - Chapter 3
Jade let out a loud, mocking snort, and Rigel’s ears turned bright red. A twitch even ran across his thin, gaunt cheeks.
The flush spreading across his still-youthful, pale face might have looked pleasant—but it wasn’t to her taste.
Rigel huffed and cried out,
“I had plenty of other things to do even without this mess!”
“Sure you did.”
“I really was busy with research! I can now make rain fall on parched land!”
And then he attacked Jade.
“You can’t even do something like this! You don’t care at all, do you? It’s not just about killing monsters in the expedition party!”
What was she supposed to do? Jade snorted again.
“I saw your research. You need about a hundred water-affinity mages for that spell, right? And doesn’t making it rain here just cause drought elsewhere?”
“W-well…”
“It’s a spell you shouldn’t use just for someone’s convenience, isn’t it?”
Leaving Rigel sullen behind, Jade sped up slightly. Her intelligent horse followed her will perfectly, while Rigel—who was utterly hopeless at riding—fell far behind.
“Haha, Lord Rigel doesn’t seem to tire at all, chasing after Lady Jade like a chick that’s just hatched from its egg and found its mother.”
“Don’t make that sickening noise. Looks like your schedule’s been too easy lately? I really don’t get why he keeps provoking her like that. Or maybe he doesn’t even realize he’s being provocative.”
Because he genuinely thinks it’s advice meant for me.
At Jade’s sarcasm, Bernard chuckled heartily.
“In any case, please consider it. You’ll need to find a fiancé soon, and since Lady Jade is a mage, your partner should be a knight—it’s only fair. Building relationships this way will make things easier on your heart later.”
It was a custom handed down from ancient times.
The reason this foolish custom had endured was surprisingly simple.
For some strange reason, turning magic into an offensive tool was incredibly difficult—as if the gods insisted magic should only be used to shelter others.
Consequently, mages collapsed trying to slay a single monster, as the amount of mana required yielded extremely poor efficiency.
Suffering under this limitation, people eventually developed a new method: enchanting a knight’s sword with magic to strike monsters.
Once the blade pierced the monster’s hide, the magic took effect—sword and spell combining to maximize their power.
In the past, a great knight-king, who had once groaned under monster attacks, met a mage and discovered this truth.
When the king swung his sword, the mage timely wreathed it in flame; when hordes of monsters attacked, the mage summoned winds to shield him. As long as the mage stood with him, the knight-king feared nothing.
Having endured countless trials together, they eventually fell in love—and their tale became so legendary that countless bards sang of it.
Thus arose the strange prejudice and tradition that a “proper” mage must always pair with a knight.
On top of everything, she was already being pressured by Mabel Broen to find a partner with a “perfect bloodline,” and now even had to satisfy the condition of being a decent knight? Damn it.
“I’m sick of it, so sick. It’s not like we’re together because we truly love each other or because we’re a perfect pair—just because people force us to choose!”
Her grumbling was suddenly interrupted by a loud shout.
“Over there! There’s a monster in the tree!”
“It’s not big. No pack either. Wrap my spear in wind—I’ll handle this!”
Looking up, they saw hideous crimson eyes gleaming through the leaves.
The creature, its round eyeballs largely uncovered by lids, watched them from its hiding place. The sun had nearly set—it was almost time for monsters to become active.
The only minor weakness of that repulsive creature was that it was nocturnal—though even that didn’t apply to all of them.
“It’s a scout. If we let it go, a huge pack will overrun us by dawn.”
“Shoot an arrow—”
Chaos erupted around them.
Ignoring all the commotion, Jade uttered a short incantation. In that instant, flames violently burst around the monster hiding among the leaves, its red eyes flashing brightly.
Kyaak! Kiyaaak!
Did a knight really need to kill monsters for her? That certainly didn’t apply to Jade.
A black shape dropped from the tree with a thud. Black ash scattered around in a soft rain.
“Just one? Simple enough. Let’s move on—we still have a long way to go.”
If efficiency was low, she’d simply pour in more power. That was the exceptional trait of Jade Broen, the Flame Mage—and precisely why the king had chosen her.
And just as the expedition was progressing smoothly, Jade suddenly needed to visit a nearby Mage Guild.
But “nearby” still meant a full day’s ride on horseback. Using magic wasn’t an option—transportation spells fell under wind magic, which she couldn’t properly perform.
Jade asked the mage assigned to the expedition party solely for travel purposes to cast the transportation spell for her.
“Thanks.”
“You’re welcome. It’s literally my job.”

The mage, selected for his skill, smiled kindly.
After murmuring the incantation for over three full minutes, just as he was about to activate the wind-transport spell for Jade, he suddenly opened his mouth wide.
“A—ah-choo!”
With a loud sneeze, he utterly ruined the final syllable of the spell—but, unfortunately, that sneeze sounded suspiciously similar to certain phonemes.
It was only a guess, but it must have been true.
Because, instead of failing as it normally would, the spell actually activated.
“What—”
Before the startled Jade could grab Rigel, who stood blankly beside her, her small body vanished from the dusty ground—and reappeared, astonishingly, in midair above a lake.
She didn’t know it yet, but that lake was part of the Atanase Forest.
[This is the timeline separator]Jade’s eyes snapped open. Somehow, it felt as if she’d slept for a very long time.
Before her eyes flickered a fireplace, crackling softly with logs burning bright red inside. She lay sprawled across a long chair placed before it.
As she slowly sat up, pain still coursed through her body—but her limbs were free. Only a single blanket lay loosely across her stomach.
Earlier, she’d barely recalled her name—Dal—but now all her memories had fully returned.
The lake’s surface had been warm from sunlight, yet the inside felt like ice. With no talent for water magic whatsoever, she could only thrash helplessly.
She’d barely managed to swim ashore, crawled under a tree, spat out water, and then her cheek had thudded against the ground.
Autumn winds chilled her body. She knew staying like this was dangerous, but she couldn’t move at all—not even enough strength remained to chant a spell, despite being a mage. How pitiful.
Then came vibrations through her skin—the sound of hooves striking the earth, someone trampling grass as they dismounted.
‘Another fresh corpse?’
A large, warm hand touched her neck.
That person had carried Jade to his home.
She felt both relief and wariness. The warmth from the fireplace felt cozy, yet her fingertips and toes remained cold.
“I appreciate you bringing me here…”
But why tie me up?
Jade scratched her head.
Should she run? Or stay?
No—first, she needed to figure out who the owner was, since the house seemed empty for now.
With firm resolve, she stood up. She felt a bit dizzy but could move well enough. Looking around, the place was ordinary—a small living room, a kitchen, a few connecting doors.
But one thing stood out clearly: a sword leaning against the wall. Jade quickly approached it and immediately began inspecting the blade.
The black leather scabbard was plain and bore no decorations—utterly simple.
Yet the white hilt extending from it traced perfectly designed, elegant cross-lines, immaculately pure white.
Though plainly shaped compared to heavily adorned swords, it strangely radiated an overwhelming presence.
This wasn’t an ordinary object. Could there be a hidden family crest somewhere?
But finding engraved details in the dim room was difficult.
“—.”
A short syllable slipped involuntarily from her lips—the fire magic incantation.
The length of a spell varied immensely based on skill; such brevity proved Jade’s mastery.
But no flame appeared to light the darkness.
“What?”
Had her mana not recovered yet? But she felt much better physically. Fire magic never failed her.
Puzzled, she tilted her head and tried to chant again—until she remembered the voice she’d heard just before passing out.
‘Atanase Forest.’
Right! Oh no!
Jade rushed across the small living room and flung open the door to the outside—she had to confirm whether she really stood within the Atanase Forest. The failure of her magic alone wasn’t enough to convince her.
But instead of lush greenery, what appeared before her eyes was someone’s chest. She smacked right into it.
“Ugh!”
A pathetic, barely swallowed yelp earned her a disdainful voice.
“Do you have a hobby of running into things?”
Jade looked up—and their eyes met.
It felt as if the entire background had vanished.

Even before fainting, she’d sensed it: the man was breathtakingly handsome, needing no explanation. His sharply contoured brows exuded masculinity, leading to a high, straight nose and a firm jawline.
She didn’t even feel the need to list such obvious traits—he was simply perfect.
Except, as before, his ash-gray eyes stood out most vividly. Set close together beneath thick brows, their pale irises gleamed sharply—like a predator’s.
Fierce, yet undeniably striking.
So this was what a face that bewitched people looked like. Jade offered a dazed greeting.
“Uh… hello…?”
At her awkward, half-fitting salutation, the man raised one eyebrow quizzically.
“Move.”
“Y-yes…”
Jade quickly sidestepped. The man removed his gloves and placed them by the windowsill, then tossed his robe-like outer garment carelessly onto a chair—revealing a short-sleeved tunic underneath.
Isn’t he cold? Jade glanced his way, assessing the situation.
His build resembled other knights she’d seen—roughly like he was carved from stone—but he seemed taller and broader.
Yet the line from his neck to his broad shoulders flowed elegantly, and his long limbs kept him from looking clumsy. Watching him walk quietly felt like watching a magnificent wall move.
Assuming such a thing as a magnificent wall even existed.
The man soon approached the dying embers in the hearth and began boiling water.

It is so sweet how preciously the treat the eggs because they are empathetic to the old hen’s struggle. Idk why I didn’t expect that from their character. I wonder how fervently her aides and servants are searching for her right now? I feel like one of them should be clever enough to investigate the uncle
