“No, it had just fallen inside there.”
Jade found herself stammering an excuse without even realizing it.

“I don’t even know where it broke off from….”
“Give it here.”
As she loosened her grip on the bird’s wing, the object was swiftly captured in Axel’s hand.
Yet he didn’t even glance at it—just tossed it back into the box.
“Clothes. Did you take out everything usable?”
His voice was calm, unlike his eyes, which had been as cold as winter wind. It was as if he insisted the object had no effect on him whatsoever.
“Wasn’t there another scarf or something?”
“Huh? Oh… well, there’s one, but you should wear it.”
“You wear it. I don’t need it. We’ve found enough clothes—mission accomplished.”
Axel closed the box and firmly latched its hinges. Then, picking up the items Jade had selected, he headed outside. Jade obediently followed him.
Even after they returned to the warmth of the house, he said nothing about the object. He moved silently, as though busy organizing the things they’d brought back.
Jade, too, flipped through the books Axel had carried in, one page at a time.
