What she discovered was something barely poking up among the fallen leaves covering the tree roots.

But if her guess was correct, that something was of truly great value.

Jade immediately ran to the tree with the white trunk, knelt down, and carefully brushed aside the leaves. What was fully revealed then was—

“A golden stag mushroom!”

The vividly yellow mushroom, which looked poisonous to anyone who saw it, got its name from its resemblance to a stag’s antlers. Its growing season and typical locations were both uncertain.

Yet demand for it was extremely high, because mages used it as an ingredient in restorative potions when they had overexerted their magic.

Though refining it right now was difficult, it was something she could take out and use effectively later. Especially for Jade, who maintained her offensive power by recklessly expending magic without pairing with a knight, it held even greater worth.

Eyes alight, Jade gently dug around with her hands. Fortunately, her efforts paid off—the mushroom came out completely intact, without a single root damaged.

The moment an elated Jade carefully placed the mushroom into her basket and lifted her head, she thought she saw another vivid yellow in the distance—unmistakably brilliant and dazzling even in the sunset glow.

She dashed over, stumbling through the underbrush, and sure enough, it was another golden stag mushroom. And right beside it, another stem was poking up.

In less than ten minutes, Jade had gathered three large golden stag mushrooms.

“Wow! I once bought just a thumbnail-sized piece for several gold coins! What am I going to do? I’m so happy!”

Jade rubbed her flushed cheeks and stamped her feet with excitement.

But her luck didn’t end there.

Following the trail of mushrooms, she soon found herself in a densely packed grove of towering trees. The place appeared especially rich in deep hues, with thick green moss clinging to many of the trunks, making anything brightly colored stand out clearly.

Beneath the largest tree, nestled among the green moss, was a mushroom with long, exquisitely branching antler-like caps—so stunning it instantly made the previous three seem forgettable.

Jade silently cheered inwardly and immediately ran toward it.

It was a tree with an enormous trunk—so large that someone of Jade’s small stature could easily hide two people behind it without being noticed.

This really is the last one. I’ll stop harvesting here for today and come back tomorrow to search again!

She glanced around. The light still lingered softly in the surroundings—the sun hadn’t fully set yet, so she still had enough time.

Most large beasts were nocturnal, and according to Axel, dangerous large creatures never came near his home—perhaps because they knew he hunted.

Jade finally managed to cradle the largest mushroom safely in her arms.

“Hehe.”

She’d obtained four whole golden stag mushrooms—specimens so rare they were hard to find even with money. Today’s haul was truly remarkable.

“Maybe I’ll share a little with Blake. As for Rigel, he can forget about it even in his dreams.”

Imagining a happy future, Jade lifted her head.

And then she saw long, sharp fingers extending around the tree trunk.

“Huh…?”

Very slowly, a huge eye emerged from behind the tree, staring at her—its round eyeball almost entirely exposed due to a nearly absent eyelid.

Their eyes met.

The iris, set against a white sclera laced with bloodshot veins, was horrifyingly crimson. Reflected in it was unmistakable hunger.

Between the grotesquely stretched lips sat rows of sharp teeth that could never belong to a human.

Humanoid features, carnivorous teeth, claw-like nails, and those distinctively red eyes—

It was a monster.

The moment she realized this, Jade instinctively chanted a spell, as if the training of several years had become second nature. And then she felt a chill so intense it was as though her entire body—from head to toe—had frozen solid.

You fool, this is the Atanase Forest!

No flame appeared, and Jade was now merely a delicious but defenseless meal. The monster seemed to understand this too—its mouth stretched even wider.

The beast’s arm, reaching out like a vine, moved with agonizing slowness. She felt each fleeting instant on her skin. Goosebumps rose.

Just before the sharp claws touched her eyes, Jade drew the dagger from her bosom and swung it—the same one she’d had since she’d fallen here.

But of course, it had little effect—only a deep gash on one of the fingers reaching for her.

Kyaah!

Well, at least she’d managed to provoke it.

Jade tried to run toward the house, but the monster was clever. With a flick of its hollow eyes, it lunged to block her path, forcing her to bolt in the opposite direction.

Fortunately, it wasn’t an extremely fast type of monster. The problem was that Jade, being a mage, wasn’t particularly swift either.

“Damn it! The sun hasn’t even fully set yet—why now…!”

There was only one criterion distinguishing monsters from ordinary animals: Did they specifically crave humans as prey?

If the answer was “yes,” it was classified as a monster.

Yet despite the lingering traces of sunset still coloring the surroundings, this nocturnal monster had appeared—likely because of Jade. These creatures preferred feeding on mages or knights who wielded magical power.

The monster was gradually driving her toward darker areas—deep into thickets where even the sunset glow couldn’t penetrate.

Where human vision would narrow, and the monster’s would dominate—until it could finally claim her as prey.

But Jade had no intention of playing along with its plan.

At last, she spotted a tree whose branches bent midway, creating a foothold. She quickly ran and leaped onto it—her childhood habit of climbing the gardener’s treehouse now paying off.

She felt the tips of the monster’s claws barely graze the heel of her shoe.

Kyaah! Kyaah!

Even with insufficient arm strength, as long as her legs had something to hold onto, she could stay suspended.

“Hah…”

Jade panted heavily for breath. Looking down, she saw the creature below, set against the darkening forest, gnashing its teeth in hunger. Its large eyes spun wildly, struggling to focus.

She wiped the sweat trickling down her neck and muttered,

“You really picked a foolish meal, didn’t you?”

She’d only considered wild beasts—not monsters at all.

Those things ate humans. She never imagined they’d be in a place like the Atanase Forest, where prey was supposedly scarce.

But people often got lost and died here—and likely many went missing—so the forest must have been quite livable for monsters.

She should’ve been more careful. She’d let her guard down completely in this new environment. And she’d served on monster-hunting squads for years!

Jade stared wistfully at the faint remnants of the setting sun visible through the branches.

Soon the sun would fully set and the moon would rise. Then, deep darkness and unease would envelop the forest, and large beasts and monsters alike would roam freely.

‘Can I survive here until dawn?’

The answer was clear: impossible. The cold was a problem, but more urgently, the branch beneath her feet wasn’t sturdy enough.

Therefore, she had to shake off this monster and run straight to Axel’s house—while there was still some light left.

The monster kept scraping the bark with its long, sharp claws. Ignoring the risk of falling, it climbed desperately upward, the scratches inching higher and higher—soon it would reach the spot just beneath where she clung.

Jade narrowed her eyes as she looked down carefully at the monster.

What if she jumped and stomped on its head?

Most monsters shared a roughly humanoid shape. The one below was on the smaller side, and its neck seemed slender compared to its head.

If she dropped with full weight, it might deliver a decent blow—ideally snapping its neck. That would give her a chance to escape.

Having made up her mind, Jade spoke.

“Hey, your meal is right here.”

The monster reacted strongly to her deliberately calm voice. Its fervent, desperate gaze locked onto her.

Yes, keep looking up. That’ll make it easiest to stomp its head and strike its neck.

“Look here. Yes… just like that.”

She counted silently in her head, steeling herself to jump. Slowly, she began the countdown.

Seven, eight, nine, nine and a half, nine and three-quarters, nine and seven-eighths…!

The monster still stared at her with single-minded intensity.

Just as she truly resolved to leap down and smash that ugly monster’s nose, she heard something cutting through the air.

Or so she thought—it all happened in such an instant that everything felt like mere conjecture.

Through the tangled thicket of branches, a white flash surged forward.

In the blink of an eye, it closed the distance, sliced through the monster’s flesh, and embedded itself deep into the tree. The monster died instantly, the light piercing its back before it could even scream. Something wet splattered onto her legs.

Startled, Jade exhaled a ragged breath.

Then, from the darkness, a massive figure emerged.

Ex-husband Wants Reconciliation

One-line summary: Chasing the wife to the crematorium (making an effort to attract someone who has become indifferent), the female lead doesn’t look back, the second male lead takes the position.

Intro:

To repay the kindness of the older generation, Su Mu crossed into a female-dominated world and became a live-in daughter-in-law of the Yan family, single-handedly saving the Yan family from fire and water.

But her husband, Yan Jiyue, the eldest son of the Yan family, treated her with sarcasm and never showed her a good face.

It wasn’t until after Su Mu’s death that this pampered and arrogant young master shed a few fake tears and pretended to want to die for love.

This life’s kindness was enough. If there was a next life, she would definitely kick Yan Jiyue away.

Who knew that the heavens would be so kind as to allow her to be reborn, returning to the time when she had just married into the Yan family.

Su Mu glanced at the Yan eldest son, who still spoke coldly to her, and threw a divorce letter in front of him.

“Let’s divorce!”

***

Yan Jiyue never imagined that he would be reborn. He happily went to find Su Mu, wanting to make up for the mistakes he had made in his ignorant youth.

Wasn’t the reason the heavens allowed him to be reborn to let him reconcile with Su Mu?

But when he pushed open the door to Su Mu’s room, the person lying on the bed was another man.

Su Mu’s personal attendant, Xie Yi.

Yan Jiyue hated him so much that his teeth itched. In front of Su Mu, Xie Yi was a gentle and considerate whisperer of sweet nothings, but in reality, he was vicious-hearted and deliberately sabotaged their husband and wife relationship.

In the previous life, it was he who secretly hid in Su Mu’s coffin and committed suicide, stealing a step ahead of him to be buried with Su Mu.

Yan Jiyue’s eyes were filled with hatred as he cursed, “What kind of thing are you? Your background is lowly, what right do you have to occupy Su Mu?”

Xie Yi looked at the sleeping Su Mu and no longer pretended to be a whisperer of sweet nothings.

He proudly stuck out his belly, “I have the right because my belly is capable of giving the Wife-master a daughter.”

***

Yan Jiyue was consumed with jealousy. He spread rumors that Xie Yi had once been branded with the mark of a “harlot” on his chest.

But on the night Xie Yi cut off the flesh bearing that mark, Su Mu suddenly realized something was amiss.

“How did you know the exact moment I was poisoned? And why did you show up a month early?”

Xie Yi remained silent, blood from his wound soaking through his robes. His sapphire eyes brimmed with anguish – or was it just a flawless act?

Between a once-arrogant husband now seeking redemption, and a gentle soul willing to die for her – who truly held the darkest secrets? And could it be that Su Mu and Yan Jiyue weren’t the only ones given a second chance at life…?

[Reading Guide]

1. True divorce, chasing the wife to the crematorium, the female lead doesn’t look back, the male lead is Xie Yi.
