Back when Rilvan had insisted on assigning two men to accompany her, claiming they were Millay’s people, Laila hadn’t given it much thought. She’d only wondered vaguely if it was just to keep track of her movements, just in case.

But Millay apparently anticipated that Wessex might fall into serious trouble while Laila was en route there.

As if to confirm this, one of Millay’s knights, a man named Brian, had immediately sent the mercenaries and their ship away from the city—because if a third party learned their whereabouts, who knew what might happen later.

The place where they now stayed was a coastal city in the kingdom of Ottilie, situated about five more days’ travel by sea from Wessex.

Those remaining numbered six in total: Laila, her maid Alice, the two original escort knights she’d brought, and two knights dispatched by Millay.

None of them had any connections in Ottilie.

Brian seemed to think even this number was too large, yet he couldn’t quite bring himself to exclude Laila’s personal guards.

Having already received instructions from Millay on what to do in an emergency, he first found a suitable lodging within the city and guided them there.

Afterward, he requested a private audience with Laila.

Upon hearing they needed to hide their identities as thoroughly as possible, Laila immediately had her maid help her change out of her cumbersome attire and waited for Brian in an inner room of the lodging.

While waiting, she mentally organized her next steps and began writing something on a sheet of paper placed on the room’s table.

In the meantime, Brian arrived bearing a bundle of items he’d apparently prepared himself, which he set down on a nearby table.

Among them were hair dye and small explosive devices meant for self-defense.

Seeing these, Laila instinctively realized her escape would be far more serious than she’d imagined.

At the same time, Brian’s readiness to act so swiftly—as if he’d fully anticipated this situation—made her uneasy.
