As the first prince had said, a room had been prepared for her within the royal palace, and Laila was resting there for a while.

Spring sunlight filtered through the translucent curtains, fresh and invigorating. The warmth settling upon her body seemed to melt away all her tension.

Yet the events at the engagement ceremony had unfolded so abruptly that Laila’s mind remained in turmoil. Countless thoughts swirled in her head, and it seemed she would need time to sort them out.

After sending away her maid, Laila lay sideways on the bed, lost in thought, constantly shifting her position as she replayed the recent events over and over again.

I still can’t believe I managed to break off the engagement with Millay’s help.

Though she hadn’t been able to perform the dance they’d practiced together at Millay’s residence, it no longer mattered.

‘That man… really helped me.’

She still found him enigmatic.

But this incident would surely have been impossible without his aid. She didn’t know whether he’d planned it all along or if things had simply fallen into place—but Millay’s demeanor at the engagement ceremony had seemed as though he’d been orchestrating this for ages.

Recalling the moment Reynald was tearfully dragged away by servants, Laila pressed a hand against her pounding chest.

And then, almost unconsciously, a thought came to her.

‘Will Lord Millay come to see me?’

He’d promised to reveal his true identity once everything was over. But Laila knew—unless someone deliberately arranged another meeting, they likely wouldn’t cross paths again.

She would simply return to Wessex as planned, and Millay had said he still had matters to finish here, so he’d stay to wrap them up.

Parting now would be perfectly natural.
