“What was that sound?”

Helena abruptly halted in the narrow alley ahead, stopping mid-stride.

All that stretched into the side path was pitch-black darkness. This district, ravaged year after year by recurring disasters, was now nearly uninhabited.

‘But I definitely heard something.’

A human voice had emanated from the murky darkness. Though muffled by the rain and hard to confirm, it wasn’t a sound she could simply ignore.

‘Yet I can’t possibly drag my whole group along just on this slim chance.’

Helena’s gaze drifted toward the distant, fading lights. Her companions were currently struggling to evacuate injured people toward the square, barely managing through sheer exhaustion.

‘What should I do?’

Though conflicted, Helena ultimately stepped into the alleyway, resolving her hesitation. The area wasn’t large—she could catch up to them quickly if she hurried.

Even if it turned out to be a wasted effort, she couldn’t weigh that against the chance to save someone.

Helena marched forward without pause, sharpening her hearing and waiting once more for that guiding voice.

A low, beast-like rumble of thunder echoed, as if warning her to turn back right there. The air, already thick with natural dread, grew even heavier. Helena pushed through it, straining her ears.
