Even if Your Regret Holds Me Back (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 148
“It really took you a long time.”
Walter added softly. Though she knew it couldn’t be true, Helena felt as if her faded life had finally been understood.
Walter stared fixedly at the clouds drifting lazily across the sky and spoke flatly.
“I first held a sword at ten years old. It took me twenty years to truly understand it, yet I never realized it would take even longer to let go of a single person. Perhaps because I’m a knight who wields his sword stubbornly, I’ve come to treat longing just like a habit.”
Helena thought her stomach churned. Her nose began to sting, and her vision blurred.
“Just like eating three meals a day or training at a set time—I thought of them punctually, as if it were perfectly natural, like a habit. There’s no heavier shackle than clinging to affection that’s already gone.”
Clinging affection. Shackles.
For a moment, Helena heard a deep, resonant cry from somewhere. She rubbed her eyes, but it wasn’t her tears. She listened again—and finally heard it.
Inside her heart, a monster… an elephant, was weeping.
The shadow of the monster that had been devouring her was, in fact, an elephant—an adult already fully grown, yet unable to move forward, bound by the past.
“But it seems the time has finally come. So, if you feel that moment has arrived for you too, my lady, don’t hesitate—leap without fear. That farewell isn’t worthy of the life you’ve lived.”
The elephant had finally escaped. It tore free from its stake, cried out freely, and ran off—departing for a place it would never return to. And that was alright.
Helena felt a gentle shiver ripple through her entire body. It was as if the blood swirling beneath her skin had stopped instantly, then started flowing again. No matter how many times she swallowed, the lump in her throat wouldn’t subside.
Sniffling, Helena murmured,
“If Eugene had heard what you just said, he might’ve fainted.”

He opened his mouth cheerfully: “Ah—”
