It had been over a week since Raoul started learning to read and write.

Peering outside, Diana saw rain pouring down steadily. She felt gloomy.

Whether it was a lingering effect from her past life or not, rainy days always left her feeling as if her whole body were coated in salt—sticky and uncomfortable.

As she warmed her hands by the fire, the sound of the library door handle turning reached her ears.

“…What are you doing there?”

“Oh, you’re here?”

Noticing Diana seated by the hearth instead of her usual window spot, Raoul blinked momentarily in confusion before pulling a chair from the desk and sitting down.

“Could you start writing words first? I’ll come over and check in a bit.”

Diana replied with a listless smile.

Raoul nodded and quietly began his task.

The pleasant scratch-scratch of his pen filled the air, and Diana, seated before the fire, began dozing off.

Some time later, she opened her eyes at the crackling of burning logs. Raoul was reviving the dying embers.

Unconsciously, Diana called his name.

“…Raoul?”

“…”

She saw his small back stiffen and tremble slightly.

Apparently embarrassed by her familiar tone, he shifted away and settled himself farther off.

“…Sorry. I just feel drained on rainy days…”

“Go back to sleep.”

“I’m awake now.”

Diana rubbed her eyes with a faint smile tugging at her lips. Though it was afternoon, the rain made it feel like night.

She shivered slightly, watching raindrops stream down the windowpane.

Even knowing the rain couldn’t harm her, she couldn’t shake the creeping dread it stirred.

Raoul, poking the logs with an iron rod, glanced at Diana’s shadowed face and asked,

“Do you dislike rain?”

“Yeah… I hate rain… And the ocean… it’s scary…”

Half-asleep, her innermost thoughts slipped out unguardedly.

“You’re the opposite of me.”

“Huh?”

“I hate fire. I hate the smell of burning, and I hate the black char marks it leaves.”

“Why…?”

“It reminds me of the past.”

She didn’t need to hear more; she already guessed. It must be about losing his family.

After a moment’s hesitation, Diana draped the blanket from her shoulders over Raoul’s.

“Sorry. Should I extinguish the fire?”

“No.”

Once her small figure moved away, Raoul finally turned toward Diana.

She’d seated herself far off, apparently worried she might disturb him. Huddled with knees drawn up, her body shook slightly from the cold.

Raoul rearranged the blanket and offered it back.

“I don’t get cold.”

“Oh… okay…”

Diana took the blanket again and rolled her eyes playfully.

‘He smiled when I first gave him the cloak…’

Unfortunately, the Raoul of today didn’t smile at such things anymore.

Diana wanted to comfort him, but bit her tongue, afraid it might come across as overstepping or obsessive.

Feeling too low-spirited, she decided to return to her room early that day.

As she walked down the corridor after leaving the library—

BOOM!

A deafening clap of thunder split the sky.

‘Scary… so scary…!’

Chapter 115 Chapter 114

Diana flinched violently, curling into herself. Perhaps it was the lingering trauma of death—loud noises from the sky terrified her far more than they should.

Trembling, she looked up to find Raoul staring down at her with an unreadable expression.

“…Sorry. I just got startled…”

“…There’s plenty to be startled by.”

He placed the hem of his tunic into her hand and walked ahead.

BOOM!

When the thunder roared again, Diana squeezed her eyes shut and clutched tightly onto his tunic.

Her whole body quaked—until she felt a sudden, warm pressure on her hand.

“How do you expect to survive if you’re this scared?”

Without looking back, he took her hand and kept walking. He didn’t speak again, but Diana felt her ears suddenly go muffled.

Thump. Thump.

As the outside noise dimmed, the sound inside her body grew louder.

Leaning on their tightly clasped hands as they walked down the dark corridor, her heart pounded faster than it should.

The repeated thunderclaps must have shaken her more than she realized.

[This is the timeline separator]

Diana’s small hand trembled slightly within Raoul’s grasp. Every time bright lightning eerily lit the corridor, her dark eyes would dart beneath her eyelids.

Raoul found her reaction curious.

‘Is something like this really scary?’

Back in the snowy mountains, every day had been a battle against natural disasters. It wasn’t uncommon to be stranded alone in the wilderness for days while hunting.

Sometimes caught in rain or hail, or even buried under avalanches—

Thunder and lightning? To Raoul, they were just noisy nuisances that scared away his prey.

It had already been a month since he began using literacy lessons as a pretense to watch over Diana.

At this point, this was the only way he could describe her:

‘A fragile creature incapable of causing harm.’

His observations of her daily routine went like this:

Diana wouldn’t rise until the sun was high overhead.

By then, Raoul had already finished training and was eating lunch, while Diana was just finishing her morning toilette and having her first meal.

Anyone living so carelessly late into the day in the snowy mountains would end up fasting through dinner by the time night fell.

“Oh, Raoul, are you done with class already?”

“Yeah.”

“If it’s okay, want to share this with Vincent…? I made sandwiches, but there’s too much… unless it’s too much trouble…”

But being a noble lady, she’d never go hungry. She rose late and called that first meal “breakfast and lunch combined.”

Whenever they met, she often invited him to eat with her—usually sandwiches stuffed with greens or sweet fruit jam spread on bread.

Even then, after just a few bites, she’d claim she was full and stop.

Naturally, she ate little and moved little.

Her “exercise” consisted of blinking rapidly, running lightly toward him, or hiding behind a pillar when startled—and even then, she’d be dozing off again by afternoon.

With such minimal activity, she’d have collapsed from exhaustion instantly if she’d lived in the snowy mountains.

After eating, she’d take a short walk.

Accompanied by Angela, her nanny-cum-maid, who was both quick-witted and strong.

Diana listened intently to Angela’s endless chatter about servants falling in love, fighting, or getting dismissed—trivial palace gossip.

Though she must have had little energy, she responded vividly to every tale, her expressions shifting constantly.

Then, in the afternoon, she’d head to the library, usually spending time alone—though lately, Raoul joined her.

She’d focus intently on two or three books—not children’s books filled with illustrations,

but densely printed texts she stared at so fixedly she wouldn’t notice him even if he watched her for a long while.

Only when her neck grew sore would she finally lift her head—and if their eyes met, she’d yelp and quickly cover her face,

blushing all the way to her ears, blinking repeatedly in such transparent embarrassment it worried him.

After Raoul finished his homework, she’d come over and draw a big circle beside him.

Sometimes she’d add a smiling or frowning face inside—it meant “very well done,” she’d say.

Afterward, they’d have dinner together in the dining hall and then return to their separate rooms.

She’d wave her tiny hand for a long time—so small and delicate he feared it might snap or fall off.

After observing her routine for a while, Raoul concluded Diana was “a rabbit of the snowy mountains”—

a herbivore at the very bottom of the food chain,

a prey animal who’d tremble and widen her eyes at the slightest loud noise.

She posed no threat to him.

Yet caution was always necessary. Raoul never forgot that humans were a treacherous species, capable of betrayal at any moment.

He couldn’t be sure Diana wouldn’t suddenly turn against him either.

It was already a month and a day since he’d begun following her with these thoughts.

That day, for some reason, Diana’s usual cough came later than usual.

She skipped meals and hurried somewhere—he followed and found her in the kitchen.

She held a sheet of paper in her hand.

The kitchen staff looked utterly startled by her sudden appearance.

The woman holding the ladle gulped nervously, and the head chef stammered,

“M-Miss… what brings you all the way down here?”

“Oh, I had a request…”

Even before she spoke, they began blaming each other preemptively in fear.

“Did you make some mistake…?”

“Not me! Chef, could it be your fault?”

Diana, looking flustered, handed them the paper she’d brought.

“The meals sent upstairs are always delicious… I’m here today for a different reason.”

The head chef craned his neck and carefully examined the writing on the paper.

“This portion is far too large for you, Miss—and it’s heavily meat-based…”

“If you ate like this all month, you’d fall ill…”

They exchanged worried glances and muttered.

“Oh, it’s not for my meals—it’s for the boy living in the room at the end of the second floor. Since he’s a Lycan, I thought he’d need a meat-heavy diet.”

Diana scratched her cheek with an awkward smile.

“He’s growing, so he must be hungry. Please prepare portions large enough for an adult man, and leave bread or snacks by his door two or three times a week—not too excessive, though.”

The head chef slowly nodded.

“Did you draft this yourself?”

“Yes. It’s probably very inadequate to an expert…”

“Not at all. It’s so detailed I’m surprised. You even specified how thoroughly the meat should be cooked…”

Diana twisted her body shyly.

“It’s nothing special…”

“Since you’re here, please have a meal with us. We’ll prepare your usual confit sandwich and stew—would that be alright?”

“Oh, I’ll take them to go. Make extra—put lots of meat in one of them…”

Afterward, she gathered the maids and gave them meticulous instructions about handling her clothes and bedding. And as always, she ended with:

“Thank you for your care. He’s a kind-hearted child—please don’t be afraid and treat him well.”

Leaving the now-scattered maids behind, Diana headed for the library as usual.

The moment Raoul turned the door handle and pushed the door open slightly, he saw Diana’s bright, cheerful face.

“Oh, you’re a bit late today…?”

“…Training ended late.”

“I see. Must’ve been tough. If you haven’t had lunch yet, want to share this? I packed it for myself, but there’s too much…”

In Diana’s hand was a sandwich stuffed generously with meat.

Raoul hesitated briefly before slowly reaching out. When the food passed into his hand, a look of shy satisfaction bloomed on her face.

‘Why hide it? You could’ve taken credit.’

At that moment, warm sunlight streamed through the window.

Her black hair shimmered, and her bashful face glowed with translucent clarity.

“…What’s wrong?”

“Nothing…”

Raoul pulled out his chair and sat with his back to Diana. For some reason, he couldn’t bring himself to look at her right now.
