Before we knew it, both of our voices had risen. Those around us stared in surprise, then quietly slipped away, putting distance between themselves and us.

“Idrish! You’re the one who shouldn’t be acting so stubborn!”

I finally raised my voice. Idrish, however, didn’t so much as twitch an eyebrow.

“Cecilia, there’s nothing you can do there. You’d only be weighing me down.”

Idrish spoke each word with deliberate weight.

I clenched my mouth shut. My heart sank heavily.

Even if I spoke—

Who would go just to cause trouble? I’m going to help, that’s all.

Others might not know our situation and could blame me, but Idrish shouldn’t! At the very least, not say something like that right now, with everyone listening!

I tightened my fists to keep my voice from rising. My barely audible words trembled violently.

“When was it that you wanted to lock me beside you so I couldn’t leave for even a moment? Do you really think I want to go straight into the middle of a war? I’m scared too—but if I don’t go, what will happen to you…!”

“Then, just stay here.”

Idrish cut me off abruptly.

For some reason, Idrish’s usual monotone grated on me more than ever today. And that wasn’t all—his gaze looking down at me felt especially harsh. Of course, he was much taller, so looking down was natural, but did he really have to stare like that?
