Magic is light.

Though sometimes it was darkness, fundamentally, it was light. Even the most corrupted mage wielded it as light.

A light dance tune filled the ballroom, and Lu watched the sparkling lights while stepping through rhythms she had now grown quite familiar with.

“Do you like the chandelier?”

Melfius asked Lu as if she were a child. Given his age, it was only natural that Lu was treated as such.

“Yes. It sparkles brilliantly.”

“It’s a very old artifact. Everyone here would clamor that it’s a national treasure—after all, this place has remained untouched for 430 years.”

I see. Lu spun slowly around and examined the ballroom once more, taking in its antiquated charm preserved through the ages.

“Your Majesty was also kidnapped 430 years ago, wasn’t you?”

“That’s right. Back then, I was a distant branch of the imperial line, far removed from the throne.”

“That doesn’t suit you at all.”

Hayden looked as though he’d been born to ascend the throne, even just standing still. Even now, he dominated the crowd, effortlessly bending Duke Svenya—who appeared at least thirty years his senior—to his will.

“He was a boy who considered himself incredibly fortunate to be merely a cadet branch.”

Melfius’s violet eyes wandered through memories of the past.

“He said watching his grandfather, the Emperor, up close revealed far too many headaches and that ruling people was tiresome and unpleasant. As a cadet, he’d have ample wealth and only needed moderate favor—so he declared he’d live his life solely hearing the title ‘Patron of the Arts,’ a reckless little boy indeed.”
