It was a dark night past midnight. Lu, who had worked all day, had long since sunk deep into her bed and fallen fast asleep.

Every door was tightly shut, and no one disturbed her slumber—but the sleeping girl did not seem at ease.

Lu’s brow, already known among many as that of a beauty, twitched slightly. She must be having a fierce dream. A slender emerald-colored knot appeared, neatly tied in a circle atop her head, and it trembled faintly.

Indeed, Lu was wandering before a great barrier in her dream. It was a familiar one. Thick blood from monsters and magic, bones and flesh, burst violently everywhere. Everyone shouted and screamed, but the deafening explosions from clashes between monsters and knights swallowed all cries and shrieks.

Lu slashed away the monster blocking her path with her sword. Though she had never seen such creatures before—so many that she couldn’t even tell their weak points—she swung her blade decisively, imbued with powerful force. As she swung, she kept scanning her surroundings. There was someone she needed to find.

‘Who is it?’

She needed to call out a name, but she couldn’t remember it. Yet this person was so fragile—they might die at any moment in this harsh place.

No, they might already be dead. She didn’t want to imagine that. She had to find them before anything happened. Lu wandered right through the heart of the battlefield, not even knowing who she was searching for.

If only she knew the name, she would have shouted it. Her heart pounded with urgency, and worry was driving her mad. Without hesitation, Lu cast a large-scale spell with her left hand and brought her sword down with her right.

“Keeeeeeek!”

A piercing monster’s cry sliced through the air, sharp enough to hurt the ears.

“That’s the one!”

The nightmare before the barrier—a winged beast that tore knights apart as it soared through the sky and dodged magic.

It was infamous for never being caught and often appeared whenever a major battle erupted. And, as expected, it had shown up again. Lu grew even more desperate as she searched for “someone.” Where on earth could that person be?

She felt stifled, irritated, and above all, desperate. The person she was looking for absolutely could not come to harm. They were far too weak—she had to protect them—but where were they? No matter how much she looked around, she saw nothing, heard nothing.
