The child quietly opened their eyes.

But all they could see was darkness—endless darkness. Terrified by the situation, where opening their eyes felt no different from keeping them shut, the child opened their mouth wide. If they burst into tears now, their nanny would surely come running and drive away the darkness.

Yet, as resolved as they were, the child couldn’t let out a cry. They had just realized that the surface touching their head was hard-packed earth—something they’d never felt before.

Wiping their damp eyes, the child tried to recall what had happened. They remembered their older brothers and sisters secretly planning to sneak off to the festival without the adults knowing. They’d even threatened to tell their mother everything if they weren’t taken along.

Excited at the thought of seeing those amazing creatures up close, the child eagerly followed. But the man broke his promise. With a terrifying expression, he covered their mouths and threw them into a pitch-black pit.

The child curled up and sniffled. Their whole body trembled uncontrollably from fear.
