I did my best not to sound desperate, but I couldn’t stop my voice from trembling.

〈We can’t be certain about that. However… if the Saintess appears, Rochester will immediately face pressure. After all, from the Temple’s perspective, the Saintess is someone who deserves respect.〉

Someone who deserves respect. I silently repeated that unfamiliar phrase in my mouth.

Though those words bordered on blasphemy even to merely let pass, no fear clouded the Duchess’s eyes. El Ri Ade, the god of the gods worshipped by Dermayer, was believed to be the celestial deity and creator of the Dermayer Empire.

To me, though, this was merely a distant, hazy tale existing only within printed characters.

〈No. The fact that the Saintess will appear earlier than planned is known only to the Temple and Rochester. And you must leave this empire under the status of Rochester’s fiancée. Only then can you save your life, even if caught by the Emperor.〉

The Duchess further explained that if the Saintess’s sudden emergence nullified the engagement, the Emperor’s prior order to execute Fennel would instantly be reinstated.

〈Thank you for telling me. Then I’ll… always be prepared to leave whenever necessary.〉

I hurried to conclude the conversation, but the Duchess wouldn’t let me simply steel myself in silence.
