Didn't Plan to Become a Companion (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 4
“I brought your meal.”
Ever since the day I returned from death, the maids have been properly taking care of my meals and the firewood for the fireplace. Among them, Sally was particularly attentive to me, and after spending time together, I realized she wasn’t such a bad person at heart.
“It’s raining a lot today, too.”
“Indeed.”
It was a very late evening. The rye bread looked quite dry, but it was accompanied by steaming soup and warm tea, making it a decent meal.
“The meal is quite late today.”
“I’m sorry. I was a bit busy.”
“I wasn’t trying to blame you.”
Sally grinned broadly. Only then did her young age truly sink in.
Due to the relentless rain, night fell early, and the mansion felt exceptionally colder than usual.
“But why were you busy?”
I tore off a piece of bread, dipped it in the soup, and asked nonchalantly. As I began eating, Sally walked over to the fireplace to check the fire.
“There was a formal banquet today.”
My hand, about to bring the bread to my mouth, froze in midair.
“A formal… banquet?”
“Yes, the Count returned with guests after a long time, so all the maids in the mansion were mobilized.”
My brow furrowed involuntarily at the unbelievable news.
“The Count has returned? Why so soon?”
Sally shrugged and poked at the fireplace with the poker. The irregular movements scattered embers in all directions.
“I don’t know that.”
They had left the mansion just ten days ago. Count Fennel’s schedule was always irregular, but returning to the mansion this early was almost unprecedented.
I forced down the bread that wouldn’t go down easily.
“Oh my, why are you eating so quickly?”
“Yeah, I was hungry.”
I hurriedly finished the food, made an excuse about being sleepy, and promptly sent Sally out.
Pulling the blanket over my head, I gazed intently out the window. After a while, when even the remaining lights in the main building had nearly vanished, I cautiously stepped out of the room.
As usual, no one was guarding the place where I stayed. Once I was certain the surroundings were empty, I began running in the opposite direction from where I lived.
The rain stung my face and soaked my entire body, but I didn’t even feel cold.
Arriving breathless at the east wing, it exuded the same eerie atmosphere as the west wing. Creak, the unmanaged door emitted the same spine-chilling, unpleasant sound as in the west wing. This building, too, had no one to care for it.
Drip, drip, rainwater streamed down from my darkened silver hair.
“Ugh, it’s cold.”
The inside of the east wing was even colder than outside, making me shiver uncontrollably.
I looked around the first floor, but there was no light except for a faint lamp at the end of the hallway. I cautiously moved up to the second floor.
‘There it is!’
Soon, I found a room with light leaking out. I slowly approached and pushed the door open without hesitation. A long shadow stretched to my feet. Following the shadow with my eyes, I first noticed papers scattered haphazardly on the floor.
The sky, the sea, birds, forests, a maze in a garden with no exit.
All were worlds drawn by the nameless child of the east wing. Lifting my head fully, a pitch-black night sky came into view. No, it wasn’t a pitch-black night sky—it was Ricardo’s black eyes, visible at my eye level.
The child was pinned down by someone’s hand, slumped over the desk, looking at me. Following the hand pressing on Ricardo’s neck, I looked up and saw golden hair shining even in the dark room.
‘Justin Loi Pernelle.’
Our eyes met immediately, and Justin’s brow furrowed completely.
“Who are you?”
I reflexively bowed my head deeply and closed my mouth. As he stepped away from the desk, Ricardo collapsed to the floor. Justin straightened his disheveled clothes and swept his hair back.
“Get out now!”
It would be a lie to say Justin’s shouting didn’t scare me, but I stubbornly stood my ground and shook my head vigorously.
He muttered a curse through gritted teeth and strode toward the door.
Whether from the cold or fear, my whole body trembled. Justin, now close, grabbed my collar and lifted me.
“It seems the bugs have gotten friendly with each other in the meantime?”
Smirking vilely, he leaned in like a snake and whispered in my ear.
“If you tell anyone what you saw here today, you’re dead.”
“…….”
Trending
“Anyway, since you can’t speak, it doesn’t matter, right?”
Releasing me as if throwing me aside, Justin returned to the room and picked up the drawings that had fallen to the floor. He selected only the ones with mazes and dropped the rest back to the ground.
Thud, he pushed me aside as he stepped out, chuckling as he walked away.
“Phew…….”
As Justin’s footsteps faded, I let out a long sigh and looked back at the child of the east wing.
Ricardo had already stood up and was picking up the drawings from the floor. I slowly approached, observing his complexion. One cheek was red, likely from a hard slap.
“Are you… okay?”
“Slave.”
A chilling voice, cold enough to freeze the dead again, pierced my ears as I cautiously approached.
“Uh, yes?”
“I never permitted you to come close.”
“What?”
The boy, having gathered all the drawings, cast a straight gaze at me. When our eyes met, my heart pounded painfully.
My feelings for him were always as clear as if carved with a knife, but strangely, the symptoms worsened when our eyes met.
“But why are you here?”
At the chilly voice that came again, I averted my eyes and whispered my answer. Escaping his pitch-black pupils, my thoughts barely returned to their original track.
“I, why I came here is…….”
“Whatever the reason… get out.”
The boy, who had briefly given me a chance to speak, turned coldly and walked to the desk.
Instead, seeing Ricardo’s back, my wavering heart grew firm. I couldn’t leave like this. Because now, I had something clear I needed to do.
“No.”
First, I, a witch from the east who couldn’t read or write, needed to learn to read and write above all.
“I’ll be staying in the east wing starting today.”
And I must stay close to you.
To protect you clearly, brightly, cheerfully, without a single flaw. So.
“If you don’t like it, you leave.”
“…….”
“Since Count Fennel has returned, I can get permission tomorrow.”
The boy spun around and glared at me. When our eyes met, my heart pounded as if striking my chest, so I squeezed my eyes shut and steadied my resolve.
Once Ricardo safely returned to his world, even if he didn’t want it, I would live a life completely unrelated to him.
“I don’t need your permission.”
Protecting him from terrible abuse might be the reason I came back to life.
From that day on, my desperate efforts to protect the boy continued without a single day of rest.
[This is the timeline separator]The next day, I formally requested a meeting with the Count through the head butler. The Count didn’t summon me to the main building but came to find me himself shortly after. I had nothing that could be called luggage, but I had already prepared a bag to move to the east wing.
The Count’s face, seen after a long time, looked younger than I remembered. His sharp eyes and slightly downturned lips gave a somewhat melancholic impression.
“I want to stay in the east wing starting today.”
I barely managed to say this one sentence, gripping the bag’s handle so tightly my knuckles turned white. While waiting for his answer, my heart pounded as if it would burst.
Count Fennel looked surprised, met eyes with the head butler, and then silently stared at me for a while. I wasn’t reflected in those inorganic blue eyes.
“Is that really… true?”
His gaze still on me, the Count asked the head butler.
“Well, it’s a story that’s just starting to circulate, so it’s hard to say anything yet.”
“Anyway, as you said, it’s good I came back early to see.”
Does this mean Count Fennel returned to the mansion early because of me? Before I could properly wonder, the Count grabbed my chin. He turned my face this way and that, examining it closely.
Even on the day he first came to take me to this mansion, there wasn’t a hint of negativity in him. But now, his eyes were different from then. Why was he staring at me with eyes filled with curiosity and greed?
“You want to stay in the east wing?”
“Yes.”
“Alright, do that.”
“Yes?”
At the unbelievable answer, my eyes wandered in confusion. But the unexpected reactions didn’t end there.

“You can roam anywhere in this mansion. You can read books as you like.”
“Re-really?”
“Yes, but instead, you must watch that child closely.”
“Watch… him?”
At my dumbfounded question, Count Fennel smiled like a truly kind father.
“If there’s anything strange among the pictures he draws, bring it to Father.”
“Strange pictures?”
“For example, something like a maze.”
Only then did I recall the term “labyrinth map” from my memory.
The Dermayer Empire was a nation founded by God appointing Schneider. As proof, the temple issues an oracle announcing the time for a new emperor.
Since the birth of the Dermayer Empire, there has never been a time when Schneider’s name was not designated as emperor.
The oracle always comes with the emperor’s name and a labyrinth map. However, the current Emperor Wesley Raid Schneider II was designated as emperor when the oracle came down but did not receive a labyrinth map.
Its meaning was clear. The downfall of the imperial family, or the death of the emperor.
When the male lead is punished by carrying the female lead’s child and having periods like a woman
“I’ve given birth to two children for you, yet you still think about him.
