Didn't Plan to Become a Companion (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 3
I shrugged my shoulders and walked past casually, then heard Sabrina snickering as she followed behind.
“No answer? Where are you going?”
“If you’re bored, go play with Jonathan.”
I don’t have time to bicker with you right now.
“Are you ignoring me right now?”
“Finally, you’re making sense.”
I followed the butler to the study, and there I had a truly astonishing experience. To survive in this harsh world ahead, I needed knowledge about the reality I currently lived in. Up to that point, it was an excellent idea.
First, I picked up the thinnest book from the shelf. Full of confidence that I’d read it all in one go, I boldly opened the book—only to realize something almost immediately.
I couldn’t read.
Now that I thought about it, of course I couldn’t. Just because I’d died and woken up again didn’t mean knowledge would magically appear out of nowhere.
“By the way, Sabrina.”
“Huh? What?”
“You… can you read by any chance?”
I slowed my hurried steps and asked casually. She immediately puffed up with pride.
“Of course I can!”
It stung to see her looking down on me, especially since she didn’t exactly look brilliant—but pride wouldn’t teach me how to read.
“Then… will you teach me how to read?”
“What? Why should I?”
Just as I turned my head to say “Fine, don’t,”
Thump.
My eyes met directly with the boy sitting far away—his eyes pitch black.
‘Ricardo… so you were here after all.’
Bathed in sunlight, his eyes radiated a mysterious gleam.
He sat on a chair arranged in the garden, turning everything around him into mere background. With legs crossed in a manner too mature for his age, drawing a picture, he was the very image of a nobleman’s son.
When I abruptly stopped walking, Sabrina, grumbling behind me, bumped right into my back.
“Ow! Why’d you suddenly stop?”
“Who’s that kid?”
I asked Sabrina, fishing for information. Ricardo losing his memories was clearly something that happened between his manifestation and awakening. But why had he become a nameless child in the East Wing?
“Huh? Who? Oh….”
Even as I spoke with Sabrina, my gaze remained fixed on the boy as if bound by invisible chains.
“I don’t know much either. But one thing’s for sure.”
“What’s that?”
“He’s bad luck.”
That didn’t sound like something you should be saying.
“In what way?”
“He doesn’t answer even when people talk to him.”
I had a guess as to why, but I didn’t bother saying it aloud.
Ignoring Sabrina’s words, I carefully observed Ricardo. His clothes were shabby, and not a single servant stood by his side.
“He stays in the East Wing and sometimes comes here to draw. But why are you staring at him so intensely?”
He seemed free at first glance, yet many watchful eyes surrounded him.
“What? You’ve got eyes to look—admittedly, he’s damn handsome. Seriously startled me the first time I saw him.”
The hidden surveillance was something a child’s eyes could never perceive. Thus, the only places he could stay were the East Wing, the low hill connected to it, and this garden.
“Is he… like me?”
“What? Are you asking if he’s a bastard too?”
Yes, you clueless Sabrina—why must you always phrase it like that?
“He’s not a bastard.”
“How would you know that?”
“He doesn’t bear the Fennel name. He has no name at all.”
“No name?”
It wasn’t that calling the East Wing children by name was forbidden—it meant he literally had no name. As I scrutinized him more closely, Sabrina continued her unhelpful explanation.

“I heard he has a natural talent for drawing, so Father brought him here—but Justin should’ve explained things properly.”
Though I knew I wouldn’t be welcomed if I approached him, my feet were already moving toward him.
One step, two steps, three steps.
He must’ve noticed me coming, because he lifted his head. Our eyes met directly from close range, as if pulled together by an invisible thread.
Just as he tilted his head in confusion,
‘W-what is this?’
An unbelievable emotion rang violently through my chest. How could my heart ache so fiercely, even though I didn’t fully remember loving him?
What I felt now wasn’t the gentle flutter one gets seeing a flower by the roadside—it was the despair of gazing at ruins crumbling before your eyes. It felt as if my entire heart were being ripped open by a red-hot iron skewer.
Last night’s vivid emotion—I’d thought it was just a temporary whirlwind caused by an overwhelming flood of unbelievable events…
“Don’t come any closer.”
But the sharp, clear voice shattered the sharp feeling tearing through my chest.
“Huh? Why? Why not?”
“Slaves aren’t allowed to come near me.”
“What?”
His voice was unusually low for a child, and his expression carried a chilling maturity that felt jarringly wrong for his age.
That only made him seem even more ill-fated. Thus, for the first time in my life, I found myself agreeing with Sabrina’s opinion.
From behind me, I heard Sabrina giggling.
He hadn’t been nearly this irritating even when he’d blocked my path in the corridor, forcing me to embarrass myself.
“Don’t laugh, Sabrina.”
I wanted to scold her outright for her rudeness, but first I couldn’t help glancing down at my own clothes.
His situation didn’t seem much better than mine—but damn, that handsome face was truly remarkable. No matter what he wore, he simply didn’t look like a slave.
[This is the timeline separator]Back in my room, I sank into thought, biting my thumbnail.
The current Emperor of Dermayer naturally feared the prophecy bestowed upon Ricardo. My biological father, Count Fennel, acting on the Emperor’s orders, had kidnapped Ricardo while he was in hiding and imprisoned him.
Ricardo currently concealed his name. Count Fennel might have threatened him, or perhaps Ricardo himself chose not to reveal it.
〈He who shall slay his father and become the sun of heaven.〉
Perhaps Ricardo believed Duke Rochester, who feared the prophecy as much as the Emperor did, had abandoned him.
Tap, tap, plop, tap.
But why did he follow me all the way here?
“Hey! Be quiet.”
“Guess it’s a slave’s room—there’s literally nothing to look at.”
With nothing better to do, Sabrina had chased me all the way to my room, carrying a child’s fan and poking at everything she passed.
I wanted to tell her to shut up immediately, but I couldn’t help glancing around my slave-like room.
“By the way, Sabrina.”
Sabrina snapped open her fan, half-covering her face, and shot me a sidelong glare.
“What? Trying to tell me to leave?”
“No, it’s about your brother.”
“Brother? Oh—you mean Justin Loi Pernelle, that rude guy?”
Now I was genuinely curious about what Sabrina might be saying about me elsewhere.
“Yes, that Justin. Blond hair, blue eyes—right?”
Sabrina suddenly widened her eyes and glared at me.
“You’re doing this on purpose just to tease me, aren’t you?”
There were countless reasons Sabrina disliked me, but the biggest one was my hair color.
For generations, this family had been symbolized by silver hair and blue eyes. It wasn’t guaranteed that every generation would inherit it, but because it was considered noble—and rare—it had solidified as the family’s emblem.
In other words, the lord’s mark—silver hair and blue eyes.
“You’re mocking me for not even having blond hair, let alone silver, aren’t you?”
“No.”
My firm reply sealed Sabrina’s lips shut.
“For someone mistaken for a slave, who are you to mock anyone? I couldn’t care less about that color nonsense. If I’d just had silver hair and blue eyes, I wouldn’t have been dragged into this house at all.”
This was merely my own speculation, but the only plausible reason Count Fennel gave me—the only one of his bastards—the Fennel name was precisely because of that.

Sabrina looked genuinely shocked. Understandable—she probably thought my presence here was a stroke of great fortune. Most noble bastards lived lives even worse than commoners.
“So where’s your brother now?”
I hadn’t never seen Justin—but whenever we’d crossed paths, I’d always kept my head down, and fear had blurred my vision so much I couldn’t clearly see his hair color.
“He went with Father, obviously!”
Sabrina practically shrieked. Wait—how would I possibly know where her brother was? Then again, I did vaguely recall hearing something.
He was currently immersed in his training to become the next head of the house.
“How old is he?”
“You don’t even know your brother’s age?”
“No.”
Sabrina let out a deep sigh.
“He’s sixteen.”
Justin hadn’t abused Ricardo from the very beginning. One day, he happened upon Ricardo’s drawing—a work so breathtakingly beautiful it could be called a masterpiece.
Justin, utterly captivated by both the world rendered by the nameless East Wing boy and by Ricardo himself—who would later be hailed as the Empire’s absolute standard of beauty—expressed his twisted affection through horrific abuse.
Hearing that he was already sixteen meant his warped hatred toward Ricardo had already begun.
I closed my eyes briefly, recalling the moment I’d been dragged to the execution grounds. Ricardo had definitely been there too—
His eyes utterly hollow, as if belonging to the dead.
In my fragmented memories, Ricardo was drenched entirely in blood. Clearly, he’d ceaselessly slashed and carved at something with a sharp blade, as though he himself had become the sword.
I looked down at my small hands and thin, bony arms.
With this pitifully weak body—what could I possibly do? Could I truly protect him?
Listening to the irregular noises Sabrina kept making with her fan, I sank into deep thought.
