Ricardo tilted his head, bewildered, while I held him by the scruff of his neck. Fear welled up inside me so intensely that my throat stiffened, yet I clenched my trembling hand even tighter.
“I have every right to ask this much of you.”
The wick within his dark eyes burned with a vivid yellow light, making no attempt to conceal it. That gaze subtly urged me onward.
“So, Ricca—promise me right now that you’ll spare my family.”
Moonlight cast long shadows from his eyelashes across his face. If he issued an expulsion order with those coldly lowered eyes, it would be over. I would never be able to defy him again. That was reality.

Suddenly, my name was called out. A longing, completely mismatched to the dire situation, surged through me—so strong I could hardly believe it myself. My chest flared hot, as if instantly heated by fire. My eyes stung.
