“Why?”

Ricardo’s voice flowed out gently, completely unflustered.

“In a hurry?”

I wanted to see the expression on his face as he spoke in that playful tone, but opening my eyes would do me no good right now.

“I have something to say.”

“Oh…”

A rustling sound came—impossible to tell whether he was dressing or undressing. I glanced sideways and saw him standing with his back turned, his upper body fully exposed.

“Hic.” I involuntarily swallowed a startled breath. But why couldn’t I tear my eyes away from his broad back?

“Standing there?”

“Yes?”

“I’m asking if you intend to speak from right there.”

Only then did I realize I was awkwardly standing with just one foot inside the room, still gripping the doorknob tightly.

“If you keep the door open like that, there won’t be a single soul unaware that you came to see me tonight.”
