Did I Ever Love You? (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 4
“Manager Ji Yeon, you’re picking up the work so fast! Anyone would think you’ve been here over a year.”
It was a line colleagues often said during recent team meetings.
“It’s only because everyone on the team has been helping me. I’ve learned quickly thanks to all of you—I’m truly grateful.”
“What don’t you have? Pretty face, great at your job, and even this humility! If only I had an older brother, I’d try to set you two up.”
Assistant Manager Joo Yeon from the same team kept praising Ji Yeon.
Ji Yeon didn’t need to lie, but since no one had asked, she saw no reason to mention she was married.
“By the way, it’s been a while since Manager Ji Yeon joined us—we should hold a welcome party.”
When the whole team turned to look at their section chief, he immediately replied as if he’d been waiting.
“I was just about to suggest that myself. Since Department Head is returning to the Korea office the day after tomorrow from a long-term business trip, let’s time it with that. I’ll inform the Department Head in advance.”
“Oh, the Department Head? So they’re coming back to Korea permanently now?”
“Yes, this time they plan to focus on the Korean division for the foreseeable future.”
“That’s exciting, but kind of scary too.”
The news of the Department Head’s return sent a ripple of murmurs through the entire team.
“Assistant Manager, why does everyone say it’s both good and scary when the Department Head comes back?”
“Everyone admires the Department Head’s incredible leadership—but the thing is, they’re famously a workaholic. Since they work so hard themselves, the team naturally ends up with more work too. It’s always necessary work, of course. Everyone’s happy about the Department Head returning, but they’re a bit reluctant about the extra workload.”
“So they’re really capable, huh?”
“Exactly—the most capable of the capable. Plus, just look at that face! Makes today’s rising celebrities look dull in comparison. But beyond looks, they’re such an inspiring leader that they have fans of all genders in the company and countless people who deeply respect them.”
Hearing people speak so enthusiastically made Ji Yeon feel she’d enjoy her work even more—she found herself unexpectedly excited.
Just as the meeting ended and everyone was heading back to their desks, Ji Yeon’s phone rang.
“Hello, Madam! This is Nemo Real Estate. The property we discussed earlier just became available. When can you come by?”
“Oh my! Really? I can be there by 6:30 after work today.”
Seeing the house in person, Ji Yeon’s heart was completely captivated—it was even more beautiful than in the photos.
Through the large floor-to-ceiling windows, lush landscaping ahead glistened brightly, surely even more stunning in full daylight.
“Especially since only two units in this building are available for residents, it’s extremely quiet. The first floor has a residents’ café, the second floor a private fitness center exclusive to this building’s residents, and only the third and fourth floors are residential units. The parking garage is on B2.”
Hearing endless praise about the home, Ji Yeon—who was already leaning toward taking it—made up her mind firmly to sign the contract.
“I’ll take it. I’ll put down a deposit right away—please prepare the contract documents. I’ll look around a bit more before I leave.”
After the real estate agent stepped away, Ji Yeon took a closer look around the unit, then headed toward the elevator to go down to the underground parking.
“Should I just walk down?”
Just then, the elevator arrived and its doors opened.
Inside stood a very tall man, already inside, hood up and looking at his phone—his face wasn’t visible.
“He must live upstairs. I should greet him properly once I move in. I hope he’s nice.”
Their soon-to-be neighbor must have just showered—the elevator was filled with a refreshing scent of soap.
Ji Yeon was lost in these thoughts when suddenly—
The elevator gave a strong lurch downward, then stopped abruptly with a thud.
Immediately after, the lights flickered and went out completely.
“Mom!”
Ji Yeon cried out in panic and sank to the floor.
“Are you all right?”
The man beside her asked calmly, but Ji Yeon was too shaken to respond.
She’d once been trapped in an elevator after an accident at age seven—it had taken her a long time just to ride one again.
Whether her body remembered that trauma or it was just the sudden shock, her whole body began trembling uncontrollably.
“I should’ve just walked.”
“You’ll be fine—just give it a moment.”
Trying to calm her, the man spoke steadily and pressed the emergency call button to contact building security, explaining the situation clearly.
While he spoke with the safety team, Ji Yeon—panicked—couldn’t make out a word.
“I’m scared… What if it falls?”
“They’ll get it running again soon. Apparently, there was a notice posted that power would be cut off starting at 9 a.m. today for safety inspections, but due to a staff error, it was shut off much earlier.”
“Yes…”
Even with his kind explanation, Ji Yeon remained frozen in fear, crouched on the floor, head bowed, trembling silently.
“This building has very strict safety management—there’s no risk of an actual accident. Please don’t worry.”
Trending
As he said this, he gently patted her shoulder.
Moments later, as soon as the elevator doors opened, Ji Yeon—nearly collapsing—just gave a quick nod and hurried straight to her car.
She felt a bit regretful for not properly greeting him after getting home.
“Next time I move in, I’ll definitely greet him properly. Thanks to him, I wasn’t quite as scared.”

[We’ve set the moving date—it’s next Saturday.]As soon as Ji Yeon sent the message, Min Woo called immediately.
—Why didn’t you tell me earlier?
“What do you mean?”
—That you’re moving.
“But I did tell you last month, when we met. I said, ‘Once I leave, do whatever you want with the house—sell it or keep it. It’s in your name anyway.'”
—Where are you moving to?
“Min Woo, I think you’re seriously misunderstanding something. I’m no longer someone who needs to report every little thing to you. Understand?”
This was Eun Ji Yeon speaking.
Her tone—unfamiliar and unwelcome—automatically brought an irritated expression to Min Woo’s face.
“In any case, I’ll clear out all my belongings in ten days. Just so you know—and if you find anything we need to divide, let me know.”
—What day is that exactly?
“What day?”
—The day you asked for. Once a month, when we meet. I need advance notice so I can clear my schedule.
“Oh…”
Ji Yeon suddenly froze.
“That’s right—I did say that.”
She’d personally insisted on meeting once a month, yet hadn’t given it a single thought.
Between her new job and searching for a new place to live, she’d completely pushed that promise to the back of her mind.
“It’s… this Friday. Let’s meet at my place.”
Flustered, the unplanned words tumbled right out of her mouth.
—Got it. I’ll come by after work on Friday.
After ending the call with Ji Yeon, Min Woo stared at his phone for a moment.
Had Eun Ji Yeon always had such a high-pitched voice?
He remembered Ji Yeon mostly speaking in soft, low tones, lacking energy.
She used to wear clothes that made her look older than she was, tie her long hair tightly back, and constantly watch his every reaction.
That image was from not so long ago.

The long-awaited team dinner for the Planning Division finally arrived.
Two Plus Hanwoo Grill Restaurant had a sleek, modern interior with dimmed lighting that gave it the refined ambiance of a wine bar.
“Assistant Manager, have we dined here before? This place is famously expensive—and I heard it’s really hard to get a reservation…”
Ji Yeon quietly asked Assistant Manager Joo Yeon.
“Yes, we’ve come here occasionally before. The Department Head said it’s run by someone they know.”
The Department Head seemed incredibly generous.
With the company’s standard dinner budget, they’d barely afford pork belly—but here they were, eating premium Hanwoo beef.
Everyone soon ordered delicious Hanwoo, along with a variety of drinks, chatting, laughing, and enjoying themselves freely.
For Ji Yeon, this kind of atmosphere had been absent for so long—she was already on her third glass of wine, thoroughly exhilarated.
“Ahh, this is so much fun. I love this vibe.”
Her work was engaging, her colleagues were kind and passionate, and even after-work dinners were joyful—momentarily erasing every last trace of the stress that had filled her mind just days ago. Thoughts of Min Woo and Se Ah vanished completely.
Just then—
Assistant Manager Joo Yeon and Assistant Manager So Hee beside her suddenly squealed in perfect harmony, their voices high-pitched and synchronized:
“Oh! The Department Head’s here! Department Heeaaad!”
At their synchronized call, everyone turned toward the entrance.
Ji Yeon turned as well—and her eyes widened in astonishment.
“I’d heard from Assistant Manager Joo Yeon that he was handsome, but I never imagined he’d look like this…”

The man striding confidently toward their table looked as if he belonged on a runway in New York, not in a corporate dinner.
He stood at least 190 cm tall, broad-shouldered, perfectly filling out his navy suit. His sharp, sculpted features were so refined they could only be described as beautiful.
Yet his piercing, cool gaze radiated such intense charisma that, despite his stunning looks, he seemed unapproachable.
“Department Head! Welcome back!”
“We’re so happy to see you! Welcome back, Department Heeaaad!”
“You’ll be staying long this time, right?”
Everyone rushed toward the Department Head.
“Has it really been almost a year? Even when I visited Korea during that time, I had to rush back after handling urgent matters—so it’s been a while since I’ve seen everyone. I hope you’ve all been well. Oh, and there’s a new face here.”
The Department Head’s eyes naturally settled on Ji Yeon.
“I’m Manager Eun Ji Yeon, Department Head. I look forward to working with you.”
Ji Yeon immediately stood up and bowed deeply.
“Nice to meet you, Manager Eun Ji Yeon. Likewise—I’m Lee Kang Hyun.”
When Ji Yeon raised her head, Kang Hyun extended his hand for a handshake, and she quickly clasped his large hand in return.
Kang Hyun sat down directly across from Ji Yeon and joined the dinner.
His teammates, clearly curious about him, bombarded him with questions—and he was kept busy answering them all.
To fully join the festivities, Kang Hyun took off his suit jacket and draped it over the back of his chair, rolled up his shirt sleeves, and downed the drink already waiting in front of him in one smooth motion.
“Since I’m late, I’d better catch up quickly.”
At his refreshingly bold gesture, Assistant Manager Joo Yeon and Assistant Manager So Hee clapped like seals beside him.
“Well then—shall we officially begin the welcome party for our returning Department Head and our newest team member, Manager Eun Ji Yeon!”
At the section chief’s words, everyone raised their glasses.
“Be careful getting home!”
Starting with Assistant Manager Joo Yeon, one by one, team members hailed taxis and disappeared into the night.
The dinner, re-energized by Kang Hyun’s arrival, felt like it could go on all night—but since everyone had to work the next day, they all left the venue together before 11 p.m.
Ji Yeon couldn’t spot an empty taxi right away, so she opened her ride-hailing app—but possibly because it was so close, none were available.
Just as she reopened the app to adjust the fare—
An unfamiliar car pulled up in front of her, and the window slowly rolled down.
Inside was Kang Hyun, seated in the back.
“At this hour, it won’t be easy to get a taxi. Let me give you a ride—please get in.”
“No, Department Head, I’ll get one soon—please go ahead without me.”
“Just get in.”
“But…”
Kang Hyun opened the car door.
Though uncomfortable, Ji Yeon realized delaying further would be rude—so reluctantly, she got into the back seat beside him.
As soon as she entered, a crisp, pleasant fragrance gently filled the car.
“This scent… I’ve smelled it somewhere before. Where was it…”
“Where do you live?”
“Near XX subway station—it’s close by.”
“Understood. Let’s go.”
At Kang Hyun’s words, the car smoothly glided forward.
“How long has it been since you joined the team?”
“Not even a month yet, Department Head.”
“You must be swamped getting up to speed.”
“Everyone’s been so kind in showing me the ropes—I’m learning well, and I’m really enjoying the work too.”
“That’s good to hear. We’ll be starting a new project soon, so you’ll be working more closely with me. Be sure to master your tasks—and build up your stamina too.”
“Stamina?”
Ji Yeon was puzzled at first—then recalled what Assistant Manager Joo Yeon had said earlier: “The Department Head’s a workaholic—works day and night, no weekends.”
“Yes! Don’t worry—I’ve got top-notch stamina. I can easily handle late nights.”
A faint smile briefly touched Kang Hyun’s lips before vanishing.
“I’ll be very interested to see just how good your stamina really is, Manager Eun Ji Yeon.”
Before she knew it, they’d arrived near Ji Yeon’s home. After exchanging brief goodbyes, she stepped out of the car.

Ji Yeon stood still for a moment, watching until the car disappeared from view.
“Even though I just met him today, his voice somehow sounds familiar.”
That refined, low voice kept echoing in her ears—it felt strangely familiar.
