Did I Ever Love You? (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 3
“Why did you quit the job you loved so much?”
At Min Woo’s question, Ji Yeon stared at him as if he were ridiculous, then unexpectedly let out a soft laugh.
Frowning at her laughter, Min Woo asked,
“What’s so funny?”
“Are you really asking because you don’t know? Or… no?”
“If I knew, would I be asking?”
Cha Min Woo looked at Ji Yeon with a completely blank expression, as if he’d utterly forgotten all the words he’d once spoken himself.
Ji Yeon was utterly baffled by his attitude.
The words “It’s because of you and your mother” rose to her throat but sank back down.
Seeing him like this suddenly reminded her of Kang Joo Ran, who had unexpectedly shown up outside Ji Yeon’s office just days before the wedding.
Without any prior notice, Joo Ran had marched right up to her and bluntly declared, “Get pregnant as soon as you’re married.”
She’d also insisted Ji Yeon quit her job right away and focus solely on supporting Cha Min Woo.
Worn down by Joo Ran’s endless demands and the growing distance between her and Min Woo, Ji Yeon had finally surrendered after just one year of marriage and resigned from her job.
“You don’t really need to know the reason now, do you? Just stay unaware, like you used to be when you didn’t care.”
Ji Yeon turned her stiff face toward the window as she spoke.
An awkward silence filled the car again until they reached home.
“I’ll check everything through Secretary Choi and let you know once you’re hired, so keep that in mind.”
“Min Woo.”
“Just listen to me.”
Ji Yeon could only give him an incredulous look at his tone, as if he still held some sort of authority.
“This doesn’t feel right. Why would I go there? In a few months, we won’t even be seeing each other anymore.”
“You know my father’s personality better than anyone. Once he sets his mind on something, he won’t back down. He absolutely won’t accept you working at another company. You said you wanted to announce our divorce in six months and prepare everything by then, right? Then just come quietly for now—deal with the future later.”
“But…”
“It’s the same work, just in a different place. What’s the problem? Don’t make a big fuss over nothing. Just come quietly. I honestly don’t care whether you join our company or not. But if you really can’t stand it, you can always quit after our divorce in six months.”
‘It might mean nothing to you, but to me, it’s a crucial step toward a fresh start.’
Ji Yeon felt a surge of anger at Min Woo’s dismissive tone, as if her joining the company were utterly insignificant—but she knew Chairman Cha’s temperament all too well.
If she refused now, the sharp-eyed Chairman Cha would surely sense something amiss, and word might even reach her parents.
It wasn’t the right time yet. Right now, even gathering her own thoughts felt overwhelming.
Deep within her chest, a long-buried desire surfaced, making her head spin.
That team she’d always wanted to join—
If she turned this down and parted ways with Min Woo now, she might never get another chance.
It’s only temporary. Just until we separate.
Ji Yeon’s wavering heart gradually tilted in one direction.
Rrrr Rrrr-
At that moment, Se Ah kept calling Min Woo.
“Min Woo, why do you have to make me so anxious?”
But no matter how many times she redialed, Min Woo didn’t answer—only the ringing tone came through.
He’d said he’d visit his parents today with that woman.
Why would people planning to divorce do that?
His ex-wife—or rather, not quite an ex-wife yet—Eun Ji Yeon clearly had no intention of letting Min Woo go.
It was obvious she’d latch onto him with any excuse she could invent.
She’d keep dragging things out until Min Woo couldn’t leave her.
Min Woo had told her the formal divorce process wouldn’t begin until six months from now.
But it felt like there was more to it—he just wouldn’t say what.
About an hour later, Min Woo finally called.
“Min Woo!”
-Se Ah! What’s wrong? Why did you call so many times? I had my phone on vibrate and didn’t notice.
‘Liar. You didn’t answer because you were with her.’
Her mind filled with thoughts she couldn’t voice aloud.
“I just wanted to know what time you’d be back. I thought we could have dinner together if you came early—but you’ve already eaten, right?”

-I told you I’d handle dinner. I’m on my way now. It won’t take long.
“Okay. I miss you, Min Woo. Come home soon.”
Se Ah replied, biting her nails softly.
About twenty minutes later, hearing the sound of the front door code being entered, Se Ah rushed out and threw herself into Min Woo as he stepped inside.
“Min Woo. I missed you.”
“Couldn’t you wait even this long? I missed you too. Have you eaten dinner, Se Ah?”
Min Woo kissed her lips lightly and gazed at her affectionately.
“I just ordered something simple through a delivery app. There seem to be lots of good restaurants around here since it’s downtown.”
Min Woo’s eyes drifted to the plastic containers on the dining table behind her.
“You ordered again? I get tired of restaurant food so quickly.”
“Well… I was just too lazy to cook, but luckily it tasted okay.”
Min Woo took off his outer jacket and led Se Ah to the living room to sit down.
“Did you have dinner with your parents today?”
“Yeah, didn’t I tell you my father suddenly called me?”
“Was that woman with you too?”
“Yeah, he said he had something to tell us.”
“What did he say?”
‘It’s probably better not to mention that Ji Yeon will be coming to the office.’
Seeing Se Ah’s sharp, probing questions, Min Woo hesitated briefly but ultimately decided not to tell her.
“Just random things. Nothing important.”
Se Ah wanted to press for more details but forced herself to soften her tone.
“So the divorce… it really can’t happen until six months from now? There’s absolutely no way before then?”
“Yeah. Just bear with it a little longer.”
“…”
“I’m sorry for putting you through this.”
“Okay.”
Se Ah leaned her head on Min Woo’s shoulder and let out a quiet sigh.
“But Min Woo, I have a question.”
“Go ahead.”
“Back then… before we broke up, you told me you’d only stay married to her for one year, right? And that you’d divorce her without hesitation afterward.”
“…”
“So I thought you must’ve already divorced her by now.”
She didn’t say the rest out loud, but Min Woo seemed to hear it clearly:
Then why are you still together like this?
Min Woo only pulled her tightly into his arms, unable to offer any reply.
Three years ago.
Min Woo had clung to Se Ah, desperately trying to convince her as he brought up his impending marriage.
“Se Ah, please—just endure one year for me. I swear I won’t even share a room or sleep with her. We’ll be roommates in name only! I promise! No matter what happens, I’ll leave her immediately after one year. I’ll write you a sworn statement if you want!”
“If I miss this chance, I’ll be completely cut out of the succession plans. Se Ah, please! Please just help me survive this!”
Se Ah shook her head, deeply hurt by Min Woo’s utterly absurd words.
“Min Woo, this… doesn’t make any sense. How can I possibly endure watching the man I love marry another woman? Would you understand if I did the same with another man?”
“I know I’m a terrible person—I do. But just this once, can’t you try to understand? You know better than anyone how I’ve lived my whole life, Se Ah.”
Min Woo held her tightly as she cried, unable even to wipe away her endless tears.
“You love me. And the man you love… has to succeed, right?”
“Why are you so cruel to me?”
Chairman of C&C—the undisputed, solid position he’d always dreamed of.
Cha Min Woo had spent his whole life aiming for this one goal.
He’d worked tirelessly, doing everything possible to gain his father Chairman Cha Seung Jo’s approval.
Though he was the chairman’s biological son like his half-brothers, he’d been discriminated against solely for being born out of wedlock—and Chairman Cha knew exactly how to exploit Min Woo’s vulnerability.
“There’s only one way for you to enter the succession line,” the chairman had said indirectly—and Min Woo had no choice but to comply.

But shortly after Min Woo mentioned his marriage, Se Ah vanished—and for the first time, Min Woo regretted his decision.
She disappeared as if she’d never existed, leaving behind no trace whatsoever.
Her studio apartment, her phone, her workplace—
There was no sign of her anywhere.
Cha Min Woo spent days desperately searching for Jung Se Ah, drowning in regret—but in the end, he didn’t cancel his arranged marriage to Eun Ji Yeon.
True to his word to Se Ah, he married Ji Yeon and gritted his teeth, focused only on divorcing her in one year.
‘I sacrificed even Se Ah for this chance, Cha Min Woo! Just one year—one single year!’
But as they say, time is a healer.
Gradually, without even realizing it, he grew accustomed to living with Eun Ji Yeon.
He certainly hadn’t fallen for her—but she worked diligently, handled things well, and gave him no real cause for complaint.
Layer upon layer of such days had quietly accumulated—until three years had passed.
After days of agonizing, Ji Yeon finally decided to go to C&C.
It was the result of deep reflection, wholly focused on her career and dreams.
“The details I just explained are thoroughly written in this orientation packet—please take a look. You’ve already submitted urgent documents like your resume, employment verification, and bank statement, so please submit the remaining paperwork to our team once you have them ready.”
On her first day at C&C, after HR orientation, Ji Yeon’s heart pounded faster than ever before.
She realized just how long she’d waited for this moment—and felt even more excited than she’d expected.
“Hello. It’s a pleasure to see you again, Manager. I look forward to working with you.”
Ji Yeon first met the team manager she’d be joining.
Although Chairman Cha Seung Jo had directed HR to receive Ji Yeon’s resume, HR believed they’d received it through an internal referral, not directly from the chairman.
Thus, Ji Yeon had gone through the standard interview process with the manager like any other candidate.
Of course, even if she’d received poor feedback, Chairman Cha would have intervened—but fortunately, that wasn’t necessary.
“Thank you for joining us so quickly after the urgent hiring request post-interview. I’ll be handling your onboarding for now. I look forward to working with you.”
The manager introduced Ji Yeon to the team and showed her to her seat.
“I’m sorry to throw so much work at you on your first day, but the advertising project your predecessor was handling goes into filming soon—we urgently need you to get up to speed. I heard you handled many ad shoots while working in marketing at your previous company. Is that correct?”
“Yes, I was heavily involved in ad planning too, so this shouldn’t be difficult. Just give me the materials, and I’ll get up to speed quickly.”
“Manager Eun, your answer is really reassuring.”
Satisfied with her confident reply, the manager laughed aloud.
For the next several days, Ji Yeon meticulously reviewed the mountain of documents handed to her.
Though each company had slight differences in process, the core tasks were largely similar.
‘After years away, will I really adapt well?’
But her worries quickly faded as Ji Yeon rapidly settled in, losing track of time as she immersed herself in the work and long-missed office atmosphere.
Even amidst the busyness, her face radiated more vitality than ever before.
