“Honestly, I’m really pleased. It’s even better than I expected—I’m already looking forward to the wedding.”

Green’s voice, transmitted through the phone, brimmed with unmistakable excitement.

Sunwoo’s lips curled into a quiet, satisfied smile at the knowledge that he’d pleased her.

“May I take it as confirmed that Ms. Han Green will attend tomorrow’s engagement meeting?”

“Of course. I’ll do my very best.”

“Good.”

Having ended his call with Green in high spirits, Sunwoo immediately left his office and headed for Seongbuk-dong—he’d been summoned by his mother, Park In Young, who also served as vice chairwoman of K1 Construction.

As the gate to the driveway of an upscale residence in Seongbuk-dong opened, Sunwoo’s luxury sedan slid smoothly inside.

Though it was only a day before the engagement meeting, the house was unnervingly quiet. Upon entering the living room, Sunwoo immediately looked for his mother, Park In Young.

“The vice chairwoman is waiting for you in the study.”

Sunwoo took a brief moment to steady his breath outside the study door, then calmly knocked.

“Come in.”

He opened the door and stepped inside, where In Young, who had been reviewing a stack of documents at her desk, removed her glasses to greet him.

“You’re home late.”

“Two hours ago, we received a positive response from Marseille, France. There’s a 90% chance K1 Construction will be selected as the final contractor.”

“Good work.”

A faint smile flickered across In Young’s face and vanished. She pulled a small memo from her drawer and handed it to Sunwoo.

“This is tomorrow’s engagement venue and time. Your father and I will stop by Pyeongchang-dong in the morning before heading there. Make sure you’re not late.”

“Understood.”

Even though she could have simply sent a text or made a call, In Young always insisted on using handwritten memos.

As usual, Sunwoo memorized the note’s contents on the spot, then shredded it in the document shredder right in front of her.

“That front-page article in Koryo Ilbo a few days ago—is that why this marriage is moving forward?”

In Young frowned at Sunwoo’s question, clearly having hoped he remained unaware of the truth.

“What article are you referring to?”

“The one about P Telecom’s CEO being summoned for questioning by prosecutors after allegedly hosting ruling and opposition politicians at his villa for illicit entertainment. Is that the leverage Han Moon Taek has over Father?”

“Your father denied it.”

Realizing Sunwoo already knew everything, In Young admitted it reluctantly.

In truth, Jin Young Cheol had only told Sunwoo that Han Moon Taek was blackmailing him in a despicable manner, without revealing the specifics of the blackmail.

But seeing Koryo Ilbo break the story exclusively, followed immediately by a follow-up report from Wide Sisa—Han Moon Taek’s own media outlet—Sunwoo had instantly understood the situation.

His father, Jin Young Cheol, was being blackmailed by Han Moon Taek over this very scandal.

Park In Young pulled out two photographs from her drawer and handed them to Sunwoo.

“These were sent by Han Moon Taek two months ago.”

The first photo clearly showed the license plate of a car driving down a rural road; the second featured Jin Young Cheol’s face distinctly visible behind the wheel.

“That road leads directly to the villa’s entrance. The news broadcast it dozens of times. And the date stamped on the photos matches the day in question.”

“That’s right. But your father said he arrived at the villa at 3 p.m. and left at 5 p.m.—the incident didn’t occur until after 8 p.m.”

“And is there any proof he left the villa at 5 p.m.?”

“No. If only we could find that, we’d be free from this blackmail…”

“You can’t seriously believe Father’s story, can you?”

“Why wouldn’t I believe him?”

Sunwoo honestly wondered whether In Young—always so calm and rational—truly believed such an implausible claim or simply wanted to believe it.

“If he has nothing to do with the incident, then why did Father even go to the villa that day?”

“He says he can’t reveal the reason, but I have my suspicions.”

“Ha!”

It was absurd. There was concrete evidence Jin Young Cheol had entered the villa, yet no proof he’d left early. Worse, he couldn’t even disclose why he’d gone there in the first place.

And yet, In Young insisted there was no reason not to trust her husband.

Sunwoo stared at her, bewildered, but her faith in her husband remained unshaken.

Carefully, as if seeking his understanding, In Young spoke again.

“Right now, everything is stacked heavily against your father. I’ve tried to find another way, but there’s no choice. For now, we’ll have to proceed with your marriage as Han Moon Taek demands.”

“It doesn’t matter to me. The women Father’s introduced me to before are no different from Han Moon Taek’s daughter, as far as I’m concerned.”

“You’re talking nonsense. The daughters from those families your father arranged meetings with could all offer you real support.”

For a moment, Sunwoo looked at In Young as if hurt.

Jin Young Cheol had been introducing him to daughters of powerful politicians because he wanted Sunwoo to leave K1 Construction and enter politics—but In Young acted as though she had no objections whatsoever.

“Do you want me to leave the company and go into politics?”

“If that’s what you want, then yes, of course.”

“…”

“Sunwoo. Your father said that as soon as he finds evidence to prove his innocence, he’ll immediately file for divorce. So please, just bear with it a little longer.”

Seeing that In Young still showed no intention of holding onto the marriage, Sunwoo quickly regained his composure.

He decided to share with her his plan to make the marriage with Green succeed.

“Why is Han Moon Taek going to such lengths to forge a kinship with K1 Construction?”

“His primary goal is clearly to sell you off—securing advertising deals for K1 Construction in both Koryo Ilbo and Wide Sisa. He’s already contacted our marketing team. How shamelessly transparent, isn’t he? He’ll surely keep exploiting this ‘in-law’ connection to scheme further. We’ll need to watch him closely.”

“That’s exactly why I think we should hold the wedding on this date.”

Sunwoo handed In Young a memo listing his desired wedding date and future plans.

After reading Sunwoo’s note, In Young’s eyes widened in astonishment—its contents had caught even her completely off guard.

“Are you… serious?”

“Yes.”

“Do you really think Han Green will go along with this quietly?”

“She was happier than anyone.”

Remembering Green’s reaction just moments ago, Sunwoo’s lips lifted slightly at the corners.

At that instant, In Young’s eyes narrowed. She studied his face carefully, as if determined not to miss even the tiniest expression.

“Sunwoo.”

“Yes?”

Sunwoo, having already returned to his usual unreadable expression, looked at her with mild curiosity.

In Young, who had seemed poised to say something more, quickly gathered her emotions and averted her gaze.

“That’s all for now. I’ll see you at the meeting tomorrow.”

“Understood.”

Sunwoo bowed quietly and left the study, but stood motionless outside the closed door for a long while, overwhelmed by an inexplicable heaviness pressing against his chest.

“Do you want me to leave the company and go into politics?”

“If that’s what you want, then yes, of course.”

Recalling his recent conversation with In Young, Sunwoo’s face twisted involuntarily.

‘Just how much more do I have to prove?’

He gave a bitter smile and slowly walked out of the Seongbuk-dong house.

The suffocating weight that had burdened his chest since the age of nine returned, making him feel as though he were walking alone through an endless, barren desert.

On the morning of the engagement meeting, Green rushed over to Hanna’s house still in her sleep clothes.

“Didn’t I tell you today’s the big day? I’m handing myself over to you completely, Hanna—do whatever you want with me!”

“Wow, we’ve got a major brat visiting us first thing in the morning! Seriously, for your own sake, at least wash your hair before showing up!”

Though Hanna grumbled at Green’s disheveled state, she transformed her with the skill of Cinderella’s fairy godmother.

First, she dressed Green in a modest yet elegant two-piece outfit suitable for the occasion, then used a volumizer to fluff up her bangs and crown before neatly tying her hair back.

“If you’re just going to tie it up anyway, why bother with the volumizer?”

“You dummy! There’s a world of difference between flat hair and volumized hair. Stop talking and just sit still.”

Chastened by Hanna’s scolding, Green decided to keep her mouth shut. Medicine belongs to the pharmacist, treatment to the doctor, and makeovers to Hanna!

While Green stayed quiet, Hanna finished the base makeup and proceeded to apply lipstick, eye makeup, false lashes, and even perfectly filled in her eyebrows.

“Wait—false lashes? Isn’t that overdoing it a bit?”

“People wear false lashes even just going to work these days. Do you really think everyone just lives looking exactly as they were born?”

Once the transformation was complete, Hanna dragged Green in front of a large mirror, clearly proud of her handiwork.

“Well? Do you like it?”

“…It’s weird. I don’t even look like myself.”

“I spent my life drawing lines on pumpkins just to hear this?!”

“Am I really not that weird-looking?”

“You’re not weird at all. Your skin’s so flawless you actually look gorgeous. Are you doing this on purpose just to hear me say that?”

Chapter 167 Chapter 166

No matter how insistently Hanna insisted she looked beautiful, Green kept fidgeting uneasily in front of the mirror, still feeling strange about her new appearance.

Watching the two from the corner, Jenny suddenly stood up and approached Green.

“You’re not wearing a wristwatch? That outfit really needs a watch.”

“Who even wears wristwatches these days? I’ve got my phone.”

At Green’s remark, Jenny sighed lightly, unfastened her own watch, and strapped it onto Green’s left wrist.

Unlike Green’s calm demeanor, Hanna gasped in alarm and tried to stop Jenny.

“Are you insane?! That’s a twenty-million-won watch! If you just slap it on her like that, Green’s left arm’s going to go numb!”

“What?!”

Hanna’s prediction backfired spectacularly—upon hearing the watch was worth twenty million won, it wasn’t just Green’s left wrist that went numb, but her entire body.

After taking about twenty deep breaths to finally regain her composure, Green grabbed the luxury handbag Jenny had handed her and left Hanna’s house.

With a designer watch on one wrist and a luxury bag in the other, her arms felt unbearably heavy.

Out front, Han Moon Taek had already been waiting in the car for thirty minutes.

Having texted repeatedly urging her to hurry, he jumped in surprise when an unfamiliar woman opened the passenger door and got in.

“What are you so shocked about? You kept saying we’d be late—let’s go already.”

“Oh—Green, was that you?”

“You thought I was someone else?”

Though she herself had found her reflection strange, Green felt oddly offended that her father hadn’t recognized her immediately.

“Don’t forget your promise. In exchange for me quietly attending this engagement meeting today, you absolutely must visit Mom’s hospital while I’m away on my trip—and you have to settle the caregiving fees too.”

“I already said I would! How many times do you plan to repeat the same thing?”

Muttering discontentedly, Han Moon Taek quickly started the car. After driving in tense silence for a while, he glanced sideways at his daughter.

“Don’t let them intimidate you. Everyone’s just a person—being rich doesn’t mean they eat five meals a day.”

“Okay.”

Though his words were meant to ease Green’s nerves, in truth, Han Moon Taek himself was the one feeling insecure about the upcoming meeting. He smacked his lips awkwardly and grumbled resentfully.

“If only you’d studied harder and gotten into Koryo Ilbo, things would’ve been better. We spent what little we had sending you to photo school, letting you retake exams—and still, you ignored your studies and hung out with models. Honestly.”

Working for Koryo Ilbo had been Han Moon Taek’s lifelong dream for his daughter, but for Green, it was a nightmare.

Becoming a journalist would mean living the same life as her father—and she wanted none of it.

She hated dealing with corrupt politicians and despised even more the way they strutted around as if they were doing the world some great service.

Green had never once regretted becoming a photographer. Nothing in the world thrilled her more than perfectly capturing a subject’s most stunning moment or most dramatic instant through her camera lens.

As Han Moon Taek continued his nagging—which Green had long since tuned out—they arrived at K1 Hotel, the venue for the engagement meeting.

It was the moment when two families, steeped in mutual hatred and contempt, would finally come face to face.
