Having finished all her business, Green slung her duffel bag over her shoulder and left the office without a moment’s hesitation. Sunwoo watched the spot where she had been sitting for a brief moment before slowly rising to his feet.

In truth, Sunwoo had already made up his mind to get married even before meeting her.

He had worried she might turn out greedy and selfish like Han Moon Taek, but the mere fact that Jin Young Cheol loathed her so deeply was more than satisfying enough.

‘Since it was Father who caused this mess himself, he can hardly blame anyone else.’

The Han Green he met in person was vastly different from what he’d expected—upright and, in her own way, refreshingly innocent.

Her bold—if somewhat reckless—decision to expose Han Moon Taek’s dirty secrets, purely to strike back at her father, struck him as daring yet naive.

Yet that very quality appealed to him; she was the complete opposite of the world-weary, scheming Han Moon Taek.

‘Huh.’

Sunwoo suddenly opened his right hand—the one that had shaken hers.

Her small, firm hand had fit neatly into his palm and gripped it firmly, conveying nothing but straightforward trust rooted in their agreement, with no hidden tricks or ulterior motives.

All at once, Sunwoo recalled the blind date his father Jin Young Cheol had unilaterally arranged for him seven months ago.

An accident had broken out at the Saudi construction site, forcing him to leave immediately after just meeting the woman.

“It’s such a shame we have to part ways already. I’m disappointed—how about at least a handshake?”

His date had extended a hand carefully manicured over a long time. Sunwoo had taken it absentmindedly—and instantly broken out in goosebumps.

The woman’s hand had slithered into his, fidgeting and coquettishly wriggling without a moment’s stillness.

Wanting desperately to pull away from the unpleasant sensation, Sunwoo instead found himself trapped as she stepped closer, gripping his hand tightly and whispering softly,

“Once you’re done with work, come to the Karina Hotel suite in front of K1 headquarters. I’ll be waiting for you.”

“I’ll probably be working through the night.”

Sunwoo peeled her hand off with his other hand as if shaking off an insect, bowed politely, and quickly left.

When Jin Young Cheol heard the news, he stormed over to Sunwoo and flew into a furious rage.

“You were already three hours late, yet you stood up and left after just thirty minutes? What was wrong this time?”

“There was a fatal accident at the Saudi site. I couldn’t help it—especially since you’ve been so focused on overseas ventures lately…”

“Didn’t I tell you not to tie yourself to company business? No matter how loyal you are, the highest you’ll ever climb is Head Manager.”

“…”

After glaring at Sunwoo for a long while, Jin Young Cheol forced himself to calm down and coaxed gently,

“Sunwoo, you’ll gain nothing by dedicating yourself to your mother’s family. Come into politics while I still have influence. With a powerful in-law backing you, no one—not even in this rotten world—will dare touch you.”

A strange sense of guilt lingered in Jin Young Cheol’s eyes as he looked at his son, but Sunwoo coldly ignored it.

“You may never become chairman at K1, but if you enter politics, you could even become president. Just trust me—I’ll support you.”

Ever since that day, the occasional blind dates Jin Young Cheol had sporadically arranged turned into fixed weekly appointments every weekend—each one featuring daughters of well-known politicians.

Knowing the construction business couldn’t afford to make enemies in politics, Sunwoo begrudgingly attended every meeting, doing the bare minimum before leaving.

But two months ago, those tiresome blind dates suddenly stopped altogether. That was when he learned Han Moon Taek had been pressuring his father into arranging a marriage between him and his daughter, Han Green.

If this marriage went through, he could avoid both those pointless meetings and the constant pressure to enter politics. Most importantly, it would let him focus more on his work—so this marriage served him well in many ways.

‘You live your life, Father. I’ll become CEO at K1.’

Thinking of how utterly devastated Jin Young Cheol would be when he married Han Green, Sunwoo smiled coldly.

“Head Manager, what are you still doing here?”

Startled by Ahn Yong Ki’s chiding tone, Sunwoo snapped back to reality.

“What is it, Director Ahn?”

“What do you mean, ‘what is it?’ The meeting started ten minutes ago!”

“What?”

Sunwoo glanced at his watch with a look of disbelief, then instantly shot his eyebrows upward in surprise.

Director Ahn, who had been Sunwoo’s friend since high school, knew this was Sunwoo’s telltale reaction whenever he was genuinely shocked.

Indeed, for someone like Sunwoo—who meticulously scheduled his time down to the minute and even the second—to waste ten unplanned minutes was truly extraordinary.

Sunwoo hastily grabbed his tablet and rushed out of the office.

“What are we waiting for, Director Ahn? Let’s go to the meeting!”

“Yes? Ah—yes, Head Manager.”

******

At that moment, Green arrived at Gangnam Station, heading toward her modeling academy with a heart full of relief.

She’d spent the entire day shooting profile photos for twenty-five aspiring models—skipping lunch—but hadn’t felt tired at all.

“Yes, good! Just a bit more confidence. Now, let’s try something a little more charming.”

The academy director himself grew concerned watching Green work with such intense passion.

“Green, let’s take a lunch break and finish the rest afterward.”

“Let’s just keep going—might as well strike while the iron’s hot.”

Watching Green enthusiastically swap camera batteries and dive right back in, the director gave an awkward, apologetic smile.

“These kids are just trainees. You can go a little easy on them.”

“Oh, who knows? Maybe the next Jenny Jang or Morgan will come from this group.”

At Green’s remark, the director’s face lit up with unmistakable pride. Jenny Jang and Morgan were the academy’s most famous alumni.

Both women shared deep ties with Green: Jenny was her closest friend, and Morgan was a model sponsored by the company Green co-founded with her business partner.

“How’s Jenny doing? Still swamped?”

“Of course. She’s been invited to some international film festival.”

“Wow, she’s really made it. What about Hanna? Has she totally quit modeling?”

Green playfully winked at the director’s question.

“To be honest, Hanna’s much better suited as a stylist than a model. You’ve got to really love food to pull that off.”

The director burst out laughing at Green’s blunt assessment.

The profile shoot for the aspiring models finally wrapped up well past 4 p.m.

While quietly packing away her camera and lenses, Green noticed someone staring intently at her from the studio entrance.

The woman, nearly 180 cm tall even without her stilettos, grinned mischievously at Green.

“Hanna! When did you get here?”

“Just now. You were so focused on work, you wouldn’t have noticed even if the president walked in.”

“Cut the nonsense—I’m starving. Let’s grab food.”

Realizing Green hadn’t even eaten lunch, Hanna shot the director an accusatory glare.

“Aren’t you going too far? You’ve got to feed your staff before making them work!”

“She’s turning me into a villainous director! Green! Didn’t I tell you to take a lunch break?”

“Whatever—just make sure you pay Green a generous fee today!”

Though the director grumbled about being shaken down, Green knew full well he’d generously paid her well above the usual rate.

“Thank you, Director.”

“I should be thanking you. Seeing you two standing there like that just brought back memories of when you first met. Back when you three repeaters used to follow each other around like shadows, day and night—it was suffocating!”

The director’s eyes grew misty with nostalgia.

When they were twenty-year-old repeaters, Jenny and Hanna had been modeling academy students, while Green attended the photography academy in the same building.

Because the directors of the two academies were brothers, the photo and modeling classes merged for a joint practical session just before graduation. Bonding over their shared status as same-aged repeaters, Jenny, Hanna, and Green quickly became close friends.

“All three of our names are so Western—Hanna, Jenny, Green! What are the odds? Must be fate!”

Hanna’s over-the-top excitement drew protests from Green and Jenny.

“Uh, ‘Green’ is actually pure Korean—it’s the ‘green’ in ‘the green giraffe I drew.’”

“And ‘Jenny’ is just my stage name. Don’t even ask about my real one.”

“Never mind that! From now on, we’re lifelong friends. Betrayal means death—swear it!”

Hanna demanded they swear an oath, placing three canned beers in front of them.

Unlike the shy Green and ever-detached Jenny, Hanna—outgoing and sunny—managed to bind these three very different personalities into one inseparable trio.

Their friendship remained strong even after Green enrolled in photography school and Jenny and Hanna debuted as models.

When Jenny transitioned from modeling to acting and rose to top-star status within just two years, Hanna realized her true talent lay in styling. After studying in Japan, she became Jenny’s personal stylist.

Thanks to her experience assisting on Jenny’s pictorials since university, Green established herself securely in the industry as a photographer.

Though Hanna and Green often thanked Jenny for giving them their livelihoods, Jenny insisted otherwise:

“You’re the ones who saved me.”

They had sensed Jenny carried some painful past, but neither Green nor Hanna pushed her. For seven years now, they’d patiently waited, trusting she’d share her story when ready.

Hanna took Green to a nearby snack bar—their favorite haunt back when they were repeaters.

“Eat everything. This round’s on me.”

Hanna declared seriously after ordering six different dishes: kimbap, rabokki, pork cutlet, kalguksu, and more.

“I just got paid—let me treat you today.”

Even as she crammed kimbap into her mouth until her cheeks bulged, Green waved her hands frantically, trying to stop Hanna.

Hanna, finding this absolutely hilarious, poked Green’s cheeks repeatedly with her finger, laughing.

“Just eat already, you silly thing! You’ll need your strength to break off that marriage!”

At Hanna’s words, Green’s jaw froze mid-chew—Sunwoo’s face suddenly flashing in her mind from their morning meeting.

“What’s wrong? What happened?”

Hanna’s curiosity was piqued—seven years of friendship had sharpened her intuition, and she knew something was up.

“Hanna… I think I’m really going to go through with this marriage.”

“What?”

Just yesterday, Green had been furiously vowing to give her father a taste of his own medicine—now she was talking about marriage? Hanna was utterly bewildered.

Glancing around cautiously, Green leaned forward and whispered in the tiniest voice,

“I actually met Jin Sunwoo this morning.”

She spilled everything that had happened with Sunwoo—the revenge scheme he’d promised, the financial compensation, all of it.

“I’ll put the details in the contract during the formal meeting, but I absolutely must secure enough for my mom’s hospital bills. Once this happens, I’ll definitely cut ties with my father, so I need to find a way to survive.”

Even after hearing Green out, Hanna remained silent for a while, her brow furrowed—unsure whether this was truly the best choice.

But seeing Green’s resolute expression, Hanna felt she had to stand by her.

“You dummy! What about your own life? You can’t just settle for hospital bills! If you marry into that kind of chaebol family, they’ll definitely stop you from working!”

“They’d stop me from working?”

Green’s eyes widened—she hadn’t even considered that.

“Chaebol in-laws hate daughters-in-law who work. So crunch the numbers properly! Demand not just your mother’s medical fees, but your living expenses too—and compensation for giving up your career!”

“But he didn’t seem to gain much from marrying me—wouldn’t asking for all that seem too greedy?”

“Since when does a mouse worry about the cat? Since when does a plastic-spoon girl fret over a diamond-spoon guy?”

Seeing Green still look uneasy, Hanna drained her water in frustration.

“When’s the formal meeting?”

“A week from now.”

“Come to my place that morning. I’ll personally style you for this chaebol family meeting.”

“Really? Hanna, you’re truly my only hope!”

Overwhelmed with gratitude, Green grabbed Hanna’s shoulders and playfully shook her. Hanna responded by stuffing a piece of kimbap into Green’s mouth.

“First impressions win negotiations. If you show weakness from the start, it’s over. I’ll dress you so stunningly you’ll walk in there confident—demand everything you deserve!”

Green nodded vigorously, yet Hanna still frowned with worry.

The same Green who could stand fearless even if the president’s grandfather walked in while she held her camera now seemed, in Hanna’s eyes, like a naive child tossed into deep water—utterly clueless about how the world really worked.

“Where to next? Home?”

“No—I’m going to see Mom.”

“Want a ride?”

“No, I’ll go alone.”

After parting with Hanna, Green headed straight to the nursing hospital where her mother was admitted.

Using part of the day’s earnings, she settled some overdue hospital bills, then quietly gazed at her mother’s face—her breathing sustained only by an oxygen mask.

Her mother looked so peaceful, as if merely sleeping deeply.

‘If you knew what I’m about to do, Mom, you’d scold me, wouldn’t you? You always side with Dad.’

Even though her mother couldn’t see her, Green’s lips instinctively pouted.

‘Does a husband who never visits you in the hospital after your accident really deserve your loyalty?’

As she silently posed this unanswerable question, a caregiver approached cautiously.

“I hate to bring this up, but this month’s payment hasn’t come through yet…”

“Oh, please just wait a little longer. I’ll definitely settle it by this weekend.”

“My own situation isn’t great either… I’d really appreciate it.”

“Yes, I’m so sorry.”

After the caregiver left, Green turned back to her mother.

Her father, desperately trying to save the perpetually bankrupt ‘Wide Sisa,’ had already squandered nearly all their assets. No matter how hard she tried, covering both hospital and caregiver fees was simply beyond her means.

Just two months ago, they’d nearly lost their home to auction.

As she reflected on everything, her eyes hardened with resolve.

‘Mom, I’m sorry. But I really have to go through with this marriage.’

*****

The day before the formal meeting, Sunwoo called Green—to confirm whether she was satisfied with the elaborate revenge scheme he’d so carefully prepared.

“Well? What do you think?”
