Lilith’s eyes trembled ceaselessly, as if she were flustered. Now that things had come to this, Dimidius felt he could no longer hold back the emotions welling up inside him. He spoke once more.

“I know there was the War of the Heavenly Demons. But even so… couldn’t you have come to me in the middle and told me what had happened?”

Even if Lilith had suddenly disappeared, Dimidius had missed her all this time. Had she explained the circumstances back then, he wouldn’t have harbored such resentment.

Yet Lilith, looking conflicted, swept back her hair and barely managed to open her mouth.

“It might all sound like excuses, but during the war, I feared that if I came to see you, Dimidius, sparks might fly into the human world. I was terrified that it would lead to a situation like the one we’re in now, with demons running rampant. And in the end, since the war concluded with little gain, the very thing I dreaded has come to pass.”

Dimidius thought he understood roughly what situation Lilith had been afraid of. After all, the current Bonuse Empire, overrun by demons, was hell enough.

Even after hearing all of Lilith’s reasons, a trace of bitterness remained. His mind understood, yet his heart struggled to accept it.

Dimidius let out a heavy sigh and stepped closer to Lilith. His body seemed drawn to her of its own accord.

Lilith, now utterly deflated, didn’t look like a demon at all. She appeared just like an ordinary person with red hair and eyes.

“Will you return to the demon world again?”

Perhaps that was the question he most wanted answered. Dimidius asked it, even though he already knew the answer.

Lilith’s expression turned sorrowful as she approached Dimidius and gently embraced him. Dimidius didn’t push her away; he simply closed his eyes. Her clear voice reached him from close by.

“Demons cannot coexist with humans. That’s why I must return in the end. But you, Dimidius—you’re no different from a human. You must continue to put down roots here and live as you always have.”

Ever since she was young, Lilith had said she didn’t belong in the demon world. Though he’d sometimes wondered where she truly lived, she had chosen to settle her heart in the Bonuse Empire. Even when her demonic powers threatened to run wild, she had always sought help from sacred artifacts or holy individuals to maintain her human form—believing, as she said, that she was no different from a human.

Unable to embrace her back, Dimidius clenched his teeth—but then she spoke through tears.
