Having finished the contract with Orentia, Dimidius returned to his room and let out a deep sigh. It felt as if his soul was draining from his body.

“Haa… Is this really the right thing?”

He sat on the bed, lost in thought for a long while. His legs began trembling involuntarily—the whole encounter with Orentia now feeling like a dream.

Dimidius had changed his mind because he couldn’t stand seeing Orentia together with Baron Hermil.

‘Could it be because I was with Lord Baron Hermil? Haha!’

Orentia’s words from earlier—that tea tasted especially good today precisely because she was with Baron Hermil—stuck vividly in his mind. If that were truly the case, he felt like tearing Baron Hermil apart and erasing him entirely. With nowhere else to go, he’d aimlessly headed toward the carriage house just to keep an eye on them.

At this rate, Orentia might really end up marrying another man. He couldn’t allow that. It wasn’t that he couldn’t bear the thought of Orentia alone—it was the idea of her with someone else that made fury surge within him. His heart had raced with anxiety several times already that day.

Until the moment he rejected the contract marriage, he’d completely forgotten she might have to marry someone else.

‘If that’s how it’s going to be, wouldn’t it be better to just go through with the contract marriage? I can simply treat it as a strictly contractual relationship.’

Just as he’d paced conspicuously within the garden beneath Orentia’s third-floor window, Dimidius had once again acted on impulse. He might regret this someday. Marrying Orentia under a contract could very well be a huge mistake. But for now, at least, he was relieved he could keep her safe.

For the time being, that was all he’d allow himself to think about.

The next morning, Dimidius left Count Odor’s estate as scheduled. Orentia didn’t bother coming out to bid him farewell. After all, they’d meet again in Geranium soon enough—no need for a formal goodbye.

Orentia only had a few remaining words for her uncle, so she led him to sit across from her in the first-floor hall. Count Odor looked utterly baffled by Orentia’s serious demeanor.

“What is it? What’s going on? Don’t tell me you dislike Baron Hermil?”
