Inside the carriage, only the sound of hoofbeats could be heard. Ashud quietly gripped the dagger in his hand. The sun had already set, casting the day into dusk, and soon an impenetrable darkness enveloped the carriage. Yet Ashud’s eyes, gazing out the window, remained utterly hollow.

After a considerable time had passed, the moving carriage gradually slowed down. Soon it came to a stop, and Ashud stared at the door through which he would exit.

“We’ve arrived. Please step out.”

The coachman’s voice announced their arrival, and the carriage door slowly opened. As Ashud stepped out, an unfamiliar landscape unfolded before his eyes.

The place where Ashud had alighted was not the main gate of the ducal estate. It was a spot thick with underbrush, behind which rose sheer cliffs. Immediately, the men who had dismounted from their horses drew their swords and slowly approached Ashud.

“Ha.”

There was no need to ask who had ordered this. Seeing those surrounding him, Ashud lowered the hand holding his dagger as if resigned.

“……Do you need to dispose of my corpse perfectly, or take it with you?”

Ashud asked, but no one answered. They merely drew their swords in silence. Watching them, Ashud muttered to himself.

“Yes, this is within the ducal estate’s territory—if I’m killed here…”

The Duke of Ulphirim could be falsely accused of murdering the Imperial Grandson. It would be catastrophic for the ducal house. Ashud glanced behind him; there lay a steep cliff, seemingly impossible to escape from.

“It seems you brought me all the way to this dead end because you feared I might resist…”

Ashud glanced once at his dagger and continued. Despite holding a blade, he showed no intention of fighting back.
