A group of women, clad only in ivory towels, sat huddled together atop the large gobek tash (the central, intensely heated marble platform of a hammam) in the public bathhouse of the bustling district, exchanging gossip.

“She was trembling like a leaf.”

“Just trembling? She was sobbing and sniveling, clutching the noblemen’s legs and begging—how could anyone watch that without bursting into laughter?!”

Although the women’s hammam within Caleb’s private estate was open, eliminating the need to use the city’s public baths, they still frequented the public hammam because that’s where they could hear all sorts of entertaining news.

Of course, they themselves could become the subject of that entertaining news.

“I should’ve seen with my own eyes the youngest daughter of the haughty Shadi getting whipped! Haha! I should’ve become a handmaiden in Caleb!”

An older woman cackled and downed a cup of tea.
