Brother, You're Mistaken (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 3
My god.
Is there anyone else in the world who’s been reported to the police for allegedly stealing someone’s underwear—besides me?
Even if I generously give them the benefit of the doubt and say, “Fine, maybe you didn’t know,” how could Kang Joo Won of all people do this? He’s my best friend’s older brother!
Sure, we don’t even have each other’s numbers saved, but there are countless ways I could’ve gotten my underwear back. I could’ve just asked Seung Won for your contact info, or even had him pass it along if you felt awkward talking to me directly.
And that’s not all! We’d naturally run into each other at the office in a few days anyway. If I’d just asked you then, you would’ve gladly brought it to me—so why file a police report?
Kang Joo Won, are you seriously out of your mind?
“The statement’s done. You’re free to go now.”
The officer, having wrapped up the brief inquiry, looked at Hye Ju with pity in his eyes.
“Make up nicely with your boyfriend, okay?”
“…He’s not my boyfriend.”
“Yes, yes. Just return the stolen item properly—and while you’re at it, clear up this misunderstanding too.”
The officer probably dismissed this whole thing as just a lovers’ quarrel. Even he must’ve found it ridiculous—but since a report had come in, he had to go through the motions, and given how trivial the matter was, he likely couldn’t be bothered to take it seriously, so he just gave a few half-hearted warnings and sent her on her way.
“Ugh, seriously. Kang Joo Won’s dead.”
Stepping out of the police station in broad daylight, Hye Ju’s eyes burned with battle-ready fury. This was war.
“What the hell is so special about these damn underwear!”
She was absolutely going to shove them right into that smug face of his.
Hye Ju stomped forward, her eyes bloodshot and blazing.
Ding dong! Ding dong!
“Kang Joo Won! Get out here! We need to talk!”
Bang! Bang! Bang!
“I know you’re in there! I just heard the water running!”
When no reply came from inside, her nostrils flared hotly. Hye Ju crumpled the black plastic bag containing Joo Won’s underwear and pounded on the door again.
“I know the building code. If you don’t come out right now, I’ll unlock the door and walk in myself—so let’s settle this calmly, okay?”
After a brief pause, the door clicked open. Expecting to see Joo Won and ready to fire off a barrage of words, Hye Ju was slightly taken aback by the familiar face.
“Oh… Seung Won.”
Seung Won stood there in shorts and a T-shirt, his hair sticking up in every direction as if he’d been up gaming all night.
“I was just about to wipe the sleep from my eyes—why are you being so pushy? Come in.”
He naturally stepped aside and held the door open for her. Normally, she’d have dashed right in and maybe even cooked herself a bowl of ramen, but that wasn’t an option anymore.
“Where’s your brother?”
“Hyung Joo Won? He went to the main house this morning—said there was something to take care of. Did you come to see him?”
“I just had something to say. If he’s not here, never mind.”
“Hye Ju!”
Seung Won grabbed her arm as she turned to leave.
“Are you okay? You weren’t answering your phone, and you weren’t home—I was worried.”
His worried eyes made her chest ache.
Those eyes had sometimes made her hope for more than they should. Though now, they meant nothing at all.
“It’s nothing serious.”
Her cold, dismissive tone left Seung Won visibly flustered. After a moment of stuttering, he grabbed her wrist as she turned away again.
“Why’d you leave without a word that day?”
“You were way too drunk at the skewer place. I went to the restroom to throw up, but the building’s toilet was locked.”
“So you went to our hideout just to use the bathroom?”
“What else would it be? Are you worried I might’ve stolen something from your place?”
“It’s not that… Ugh, fine—I’ll just ask straight out. Did you really know our hyung was coming back that day?”
He was basically asking if she were a stalker.
I went there because of you. I was going to confess to you!
The words surged up to the tip of her tongue—but she couldn’t say them. If he found out how she truly felt, she’d lose not just one but two of her most precious friends.
“I was too flustered back then to explain properly, but I’ll make it clear now: I went to the hideout to use the restroom, and I had no idea Kang Joo Won would be there. Got it?”
“Right? I naturally assumed that too, but Da Hee kept saying weird things…”
“What things?”
“Well…”
Trending
Seung Won hesitated for a moment before speaking.
“That song that played from your pocket that day—it’s been bothering her.”
“What about that song?”
“She said you told her it was a track she recommended for you to play for someone you like… Is that true?”
Her heart sank.
The confession song that had played that day really had been recommended by Da Hee herself.
Da Hee had noticed Hye Ju acting giddy lately and kept pressing her, saying, “What can’t you tell me?”—so Hye Ju had vaguely hinted she liked someone, and Da Hee immediately urged her to confess and even recommended that song… completely unaware that the guy in question was Da Hee’s own boyfriend.
‘…Clueless idiot.’
Hye Ju smoothed her expression to look calm, but Seung Won’s next question left her utterly speechless.
“But why did that song play right then?”
“…”
“You said it was meant for the person you like. But at that place, only Hyung and I were there…”
“Wait.”
Hye Ju quickly raised her hand to cut him off. Whatever came out of his mouth next would only make things worse.
‘Should I say I’d prepared a gift for someone I was going to confess to, and accidentally left it at the hideout? And firmly emphasize it’s definitely not you or your brother?’
It was a flimsy excuse, but it was the best she could do right now. Just as she was about to speak after swiftly gathering her thoughts—
“Oh Hye Ji, what are you doing here?”
The elevator doors opened, revealing Kang Joo Won. He’d said he’d gone to the main house, yet here he was on a weekend, dressed impeccably in a suit. He looked stunning enough to steal any woman’s breath away—but the smile on his lips was downright wicked.
“Did you come looking for me?”
His looming presence cast a deep shadow over her as he stood behind her. Trapped between two tall men with the open doorway between them, Hye Ju felt her breath catch in her throat.
“We do have something to talk about, don’t we?”
“And you brought back what you took, right?”
“Yes.”
“You didn’t touch it yourself, I hope?”
So this jerk was really intent on rubbing salt in the wound.
Clenching her molars, Hye Ju ground her teeth.
“I didn’t even want to touch it with my feet, so I brought the whole bag. Let’s go somewhere quiet.”
“Follow me.”
Kang Joo Won smirked and gave a slight nod.
He looked like a cat toying with a cornered mouse.
“Feeling refreshed now?”
The moment they stepped outside the building, the anger she’d been bottling up finally exploded.
“To call the police over something this petty—are you even sane? This is a blatant waste of public resources! Who’d even want this filthy underwear anyway!”
Hye Ju crumpled the black bag and hurled it straight at Kang Joo Won’s face. She’d aimed for a satisfying smack that would leave him red and crumpled—but her attempt failed spectacularly.
Thwack!
He caught the bag cleanly with one hand, right between his eyes. Without even checking the contents, he tossed it straight into a nearby trash bin.
“I’ve got it back. You can go.”
Hah, so he really wanted to pick a fight with her.
After making such a big deal out of it—reporting to the police as if it were some priceless treasure—and now he just throws it in the trash? If he meant to humiliate her, he succeeded. If he meant to provoke her, he hit the bullseye.
“Go where? You just stand right there!”
Fuming from head to toe, Hye Ju plunged her hand straight into the trash bin. She pulled out the black plastic bag and shoved it right under Kang Joo Won’s nose.
“Take it and wear it.”
Kang Joo Won scowled and swatted her hand away.
“Why the hell would I do that?”
“You acted like it was so important—went to all that trouble to get it back, even filed a police report! So take it, since you clearly wanted it so badly.”
“It is important. But how do I know what you’ve done to my underwear?”
“Hey, Kang Joo Won!”
Kang Joo Won turned away as if he’d heard enough. Hye Ju gripped the plastic bag tightly.
“Stop right there!”
He just stood there, waving a casual goodbye over his shoulder. How infuriatingly nonchalant.

“Hey, Kang Joo Won! You damn piece of trash!”
He hadn’t budged at her earlier shouts—but that final insult made him halt. His eyes were icy cold enough to send chills down her spine.
“…Have you lost your mind?”
“Apologize.”
“For what?”
“If you’d just asked Seung Won to get it back for you, I would’ve quietly returned it! If it bothered you that my hands touched it, I could’ve even bought you brand-new underwear as compensation! Calling the police over this—it’s way too much!”
“You broke into my house without permission, saw me naked, and, as a bonus, stole my underwear. Tell me—which part of that isn’t true?”
“Oh, look who’s acting like a celebrity now. Do you even have bodyguards? Are you seriously suggesting I snuck into your place because I’m your obsessed fan and stole your underwear?”
“A woman who confessed to me ten years ago just happened to show up on the exact day I returned from abroad—and walked off with the underwear I’d just worn. That’s how it looks from my side.”
What’s wrong with that interpretation?
“How many times do I have to say it? I didn’t steal your underwear! I went to your place to pick something up—you suddenly came out of the bathroom, I got so startled I fell over, and while I was picking up my stuff, I accidentally grabbed your underwear too…!”
“And of all things, that ‘stuff’ just happened to be a confession for a decade-long crush, huh?”
Ugh. Here we go again in circles.
Unless she gave a straight explanation about what had been in her pocket that day, this mess would never end.
Hye Ju realized she had no more reason to keep hiding it.
“It was a gift meant for Seung Won.”
“Hah! Since when did you start telling lies like that…?”
“And that Pepero from ten years ago was meant for Seung Won too.”
Her eyes, now resolute and steady, locked firmly onto Kang Joo Won.
“Not you—Kang Seung Won. Got it?”
Well, since it’s come to this, there’s no helping it. Even if she told him, Kang Joo Won wouldn’t go blabbing all over the place, right? It wouldn’t matter if he knew.
Joo Won stayed silent for a moment.
That was when he saw Seung Won through the wide glass doors behind her. His younger brother stood on the other side of the glass, watching them with a concerned expression—as if wondering if something had happened. Hye Ju’s heart dropped like a stone.
‘Please tell me he didn’t just overhear our conversation…’
Lowering her gaze, she hurriedly added,
“Please keep this a secret from Kang Seung Won. I’m begging you.”
From just the sight of her reddened ears, Joo Won seemed to guess who was standing behind her. He gave a dry, knowing smirk.
“You’re going to have to take responsibility for what you just said.”
Right then, the sound of the glass door opening came from behind. Seung Won was stepping out. Hye Ju fled the scene as if running for her life.
Back at home, Joo Won headed straight for the bathroom. When he’d tossed the plastic bag from the trash bin earlier, some sticky grime must’ve gotten on the back of his hand.
“Disgusting. Seriously.”
He scrubbed his hands vigorously, his brow furrowed.
The more he thought about it, the more irritated he became. Illegal trespassing, underwear theft—and he was the one suffering right after returning home! What gave her the right to track him down and throw the damn thing in his face?
If she hadn’t been his brother’s close friend, he would’ve dragged her name through the mud so badly she couldn’t show her face in the neighborhood. But fine—she’s his brother’s friend, so he settled for just filing a police report.
And now this? She likes Kang Seung Won?
“Where’d you get that nonsense from? That doesn’t even make sense.”
He remembered Pepero Day ten years ago perfectly. The towering Pepero box she’d clutched with trembling hands, her sweaty, nervous hair…
“Here, Oppa. Have this.”
Even her voice had trembled like a goat’s, and her ears had burned bright red.
That kind of reaction only happens in front of someone you truly like. They’d only exchanged greetings occasionally in the neighborhood—never even had a proper conversation.
He’d been so used to random confessions by then that he hadn’t been particularly shocked at the time—but the fact that she’d held onto those feelings for ten whole years was genuinely surprising.
‘She says it’s not me but Seung Won? What a joke.’
Joo Won completely dismissed Hye Ju’s desperate, heartfelt confession. Logically, it made no sense that she’d like Seung Won.
If she’d really cared about Seung Won, what had she been doing for the past ten years? There’d been at least a hundred perfect opportunities to confess—and yet she’d never done it once, but had confessed to him twice instead. That alone was solid proof.
“Looks like she’s really embarrassed now, scrambling to backtrack like this.”
Joo Won gave a short, mocking laugh and resumed washing his hands.
Just then, the bathroom door burst open.
“What?”
Still turned away, Joo Won sounded thoroughly annoyed.
“Can I talk to you for a sec?”

“About what?”
Ignoring his brother’s indifferent tone, Seung Won strode right up to him.
“I accidentally overheard you and Hye Ju talking. You guys were saying some weird stuff.”
“What stuff?”
There was a note of tension in Joo Won’s voice as he asked.
This idiot—could he really have heard Hye Ju say she liked him?
