Whitney felt as if her head was about to split open. Curled up on the sofa, she wasn’t even sure if she’d dozed off—her whole body felt stiff and sore.

“Ugh… I’m going to die.”

Thud, thud. It sounded as though her bones were crying out in pain. She stretched, then glanced at the wine bottle sitting on the table.

‘Did I really drink all of that?’

It was no surprise she was shocked—it wasn’t as if she usually drank much, yet she’d emptied an entire bottle. With a pounding headache and queasy stomach, she forced herself up from the sofa.

The clock showed it was just before noon. At least her maid hadn’t come in to wake her and catch her sprawled defenselessly—she supposed that was something to be grateful for. Though all she wanted was to lounge in bed all day, the relentless rain meant she had to move.

“I thought it was just a passing shower… but the heavy rain keeps falling.”

Whitney looked out the window. The ceaseless downpour only stirred her emotions further. Feeling as though she were sinking endlessly downward, she deliberately averted her gaze.

If she stayed like this any longer, she’d lose the will to do anything at all, so she pulled the bell cord. Her maid came in and assisted her with dressing. Splashing cold water on her face instantly cleared her mind.

“My lady, we’ve received word that the rain is so heavy they won’t be able to deliver the newspaper. If you’d like to receive the capital’s paper here in Dietos, it’ll be delayed by about two days—shall I inform them you still want it?”

“It’s a shame, but there’s nothing we can do. Even if it’s late, please arrange for it.”

She needed to stay informed about what was happening in the capital—Chester’s movements, and whether anything unusual had occurred. Truthfully, if there had been trouble, an urgent message would have reached her at once—but given the torrential rain, even that might not have gotten through.

“If you need it urgently, I’ll send someone. But since the rain hasn’t let up, I can’t guarantee it’ll arrive intact.”

“I suppose so. I’d heard Dietos gets rain like this often. What do people usually do when it’s like this?”

“They often play simple card games or go watch performances.”
