Karl blankly watched Chester, who had humiliated him, disappear calmly into the distance. Chester’s eyes had brimmed with murderous intent toward him. The man who had never once properly pointed his sword at Karl during their previous sparring sessions had, for some unknown reason, finally crossed blades with him.

‘Damn it!’

He was furious—absolutely seething. Whenever he recalled Chester’s unlucky blue eyes, arrogant expression, and cold aura, he saw his father reflected in them. In his rage, Karl slapped the floor with his hand and bit his lip hard.

If the princess had truly left his side, it meant Chester now had no family directly backing him. Karl suddenly felt elated and chuckled to himself. Just then, a knight who had spotted him lying on the ground rushed over anxiously.

“Your Highness! Are you alright?”

“You seem to think I look perfectly fine.”

“No, I didn’t mean that.”

As the knight helped Karl up, he brushed his clothes off sharply and stared once more in the direction Chester had vanished. Maybe he should chase after him and plunge his sword straight into his chest. No—since Chester was a swordmaster, shooting an arrow to pierce his heart would be far more likely to succeed.

‘I should go see Mother first.’

Karl slapped away the knight’s hand and headed toward the Queen’s quarters. He quickened his pace, eager to deliver the news—Whitney Orleans, whom he had so longed to remove from his side, had finally left the palace.

“Your Highness. I was wondering where you’d gone—here you are. Her Majesty the Queen is looking for you.”

“…I was just about to see Mother myself. Did she send you to find me?”

Princess Violet didn’t answer; she merely gave him a quick, sweeping glance.

“But you surely aren’t planning to go to her looking like that. Your clothes are filthy—as if you’ve taken a tumble. Were you rolling around alone on this floor? It seems Your Highness rather enjoys rolling about in all sorts of ways.”
