Carried in his arms, they arrived at the cave in no time. Though the path connecting to the cliff was rough, Whitney felt as if she were walking on flat ground.

‘Even his breathing is calm.’

Whitney turned her head and looked at the uneven, jagged stone path. Merely glancing back at the road they’d traveled should have made her feel unsteady, yet his expression remained utterly unchanged, calm and composed.

Only when they reached the cave entrance did Chester set her down. Whitney tightly gripped the hem of her dress and walked toward the edge where the cliff met the path.

‘Hmm. It’s impossible to tell just by looking like this…’

She leaned forward to peer beneath the cave entrance. Waves crashed up, splashing water all the way into the cave mouth. Her dress and hair got soaked, but she merely brushed them aside with her hand, crouched down, and fixed her gaze on the ebb and flow of the waves.

“Step back—it’s dangerous.”

“It’s fine. I need to check something… You said I wouldn’t die even if I fell, right?”

“If you fall with your own body, you very well might die.”

At Chester’s words, Whitney gave a faint smile. He must have been genuinely worried—before she knew it, he’d already moved closer to her.

Whitney turned her head briefly to look at him, then shifted her gaze back downward.

As Chester had said, the waves, rebounding violently off the cliff wall, surged forcefully toward the beach. Between the ceaseless creation of white foam, the ocean’s depth remained unfathomable. The sound of waves crashing against the cliff was surprisingly rhythmic.

Each time the waves shattered and sprayed droplets into the air, the sunlight made them sparkle like falling stars.

‘Maybe because the sun’s setting, the colors seem unusually vivid.’

Whitney, unconcerned about her wet hair, tried to discern the pattern of the waves. Yet no matter how many times she watched, observation alone wasn’t enough to confirm what she sought.
