Chester was busy with various preparations to announce his engagement to Whitney on her debutante day. The day before, he’d received a message from his informant and immediately sent Aaron to where Whitney was staying.

Not long after, a bird flew in and handed Chester a note marked with an urgent signal, and he hurried straight to the mansion where Whitney lived.

Masked figures—sent by who knew how many—were tangled in battle with knights of House Rubernus in the mansion. Chester rushed up to the floor where Whitney was, and the moment he saw her falling to the ground, a frantic cry escaped his lips.

“You went too far.”

“It’s not excessive. I had no idea she was living in such danger.”

“This time you’ve clearly crossed the line, though it seems this is your first such offense.”

“Look into it thoroughly.”

Chester looked at Whitney lying on the bed. She hadn’t opened her eyes yet, likely still reeling from the earlier shock.

“Fortunately, she appears unharmed. Her ladyship heard the news and has already requested His Majesty the King to come to the capital.”

“Tell her His Majesty will surely allow it—so she should come without worry.”

Sonia nodded and immediately sent the telegram. The captives hadn’t been killed to prevent any word of Whitney’s condition from leaking out.

“To think they’d go this far just to keep her from attending the debutante ball—it must be a mere public pretext; there’s clearly another motive.”

“Your Highness, there are noble houses rumored to have discussed marriage arrangements with the Ducal Mansion…”

Aaron’s words drew a hollow laugh from Chester. She’d clearly intended to sell off the now-adult Whitney to someone else. And it wasn’t just one or two houses involved.

‘All of them offering only secondary wife positions or marriages to minor frontier nobles.’
