The blue fields rippled like waves as the wind swept through them. Whitney stood still, facing the breeze, gazing blankly at the scenery. It felt strange to look out this window—not of the secondary palace, but of the main palace.

After Chester became king, relations between Petontra and the Kingdom of Karulo flowed more smoothly than expected. Karulo occasionally hinted at wanting Adelaide’s return, but since her crimes were so grave, they never pressed the matter strongly.

Whitney pulled her thin shawl tighter against the slightly gloomy weather. She had promised to marry him once autumn arrived, so she needed to grow accustomed to this view soon.

The first thing she’d have to get used to was waking each morning to Chester sleeping right before her eyes. He was so sensitive that even her slightest movement would rouse him immediately. Because of this, Whitney stayed perfectly still upon waking—repeating the quiet ritual of admiring his face until she drifted off again.

But she couldn’t stay in bed forever. So she quietly slipped out of his embrace and drank in the view beyond the window. It was her first proper day off in a long while, and she didn’t want to disturb his deep sleep—so she didn’t even call a maid, simply sitting in a chair to enjoy this peaceful moment.

Rustle. With the sound of sheets shifting, Chester’s low, half-awake voice reached her.

“You must be worried about something.”

Whitney slowly turned her head to look at him as he sat up in bed. Sunlight bathed him as he smiled broadly and tilted his head to the side. A gust of wind tousled his golden hair, and he frowned slightly. Whitney closed the window and walked toward the bed, asking,

“Are you awake?”

Chester rose from the bed and pulled Whitney into his arms. After meeting her eyes tenderly, he kissed her lightly, then nodded while still holding her.

“Why aren’t you sleeping more?”

“I slept well. Don’t you have anything scheduled for today?”

“No.”

That was a relief. He’d been working tirelessly without proper rest—rest was necessary for him too. Whitney slipped out of his embrace and sat back down in the chair.

Chester sat across from her and lazily rubbed his forehead with his hand. He let out a long, deep sigh as if exhausted, then leaned back in his chair.
