In case anyone might refuse to believe it, Princess Violet herself appeared as a witness. Standing before everyone, she testified that she had seen Karl, disguised as an assassin, along with the royal knights, lying in wait on her journey home. Moreover, the captured knights themselves were seated in the witness stand, leaving no room for denial.

“This is a frame-up! I never sent anyone after Princess Violet! What reason would I possibly have to antagonize Petontra!”

Adelaide was furious—after all, she had never ordered the princess of Petontra to be killed. Karl immediately looked toward the king, but the latter averted his gaze as if he knew nothing. The crowd murmured with sighs and outrage each time another ugly truth about the royal family surfaced.

The chamberlain, who had been silently observing the scene, added his words.

“Reasons? One could find plenty. Given that the princess publicly broke off her engagement to Prince Karl, you were surely enraged—and considering Your Majesty’s usual temperament, this hardly seems surprising.”

At those words, everyone nodded in agreement. Everyone in the palace already knew how the queen had never left Chester alone and had constantly tormented him. Though no one ever spoke it aloud, there was hardly any incident involving him in which the queen had not meddled.

“How dare you, Chamberlain, speak such words!”

“Even if Your Majesty claims ignorance, the actions you’ve taken independently are simply too grave to overlook. Thus, the council has already rendered its judgment. We deeply regret that matters have come to this.”

Those who had stood by the king’s side, as well as those who had aligned with Karl to keep Chester in check, now seemed to have turned their backs on them both. In truth, this outcome had been all but inevitable. Though they were high nobles, they merely sided with whoever could safeguard their own interests; truly loyal individuals were exceedingly rare.

Therefore, no one would raise their voice in support of the disgraced queen or the king.

“In a situation where both His Majesty the King and Prince Karl have come forward, it makes no sense for you alone to claim ignorance.
