At someone’s shout, the nobles screamed and flung the wine they held in their hands. Soon after, their gazes turned toward Whitney.

Caught off guard by the sudden turn of events, Whitney bit down gently on the inside of her lips. This perfectly orchestrated scenario was clearly someone’s malicious plot. Princess Violet approached Whitney with a look of confusion.

“It seems we’ve fallen into a trap.”

“I think so too. This must be the work of someone who isn’t exactly pleased with this banquet.”

Whitney’s green eyes naturally drifted toward the Queen. She hurled the wine glass in her hand onto the floor.

Clink! With the sound of shattering glass, the wines atop the tables were hurled to the ground by the nobles’ hands. Even unopened bottles had their corks discarded and were tossed aside.

“A poison?! At a banquet meant for celebration—what is all this commotion about!”

The Queen rose from her seat and barked.

“Duke Orleans should know better. Doesn’t it seem obvious that Princess Violet has resorted to such a transparent scheme at the banquet she herself hosted?”

Her red eyes flashed with fury. Her words implied that Princess Violet had deliberately ruined the banquet to create a favorable situation for Chester. Everyone seemed to find her argument plausible and glared at Whitney with open hostility.

“Duke Orleans, explain yourself. Since poison was found in the wine, we cannot avoid an investigation.”

The King also spoke with a look of discomfort. To even consider poisoning the wine—that was a truly regal notion. It made clear just how lightly she regarded others’ lives.

The collapsed woman was immediately carried off to be examined by the palace physician. Of all people, she had to be from a house supporting Karl. The Queen likely had calculated that as well.

She had only two options: either prove the wine itself was untainted, or prove someone else had poisoned it. Whitney took a deep breath. At that moment, her aunt approached and whispered quietly.

“Whitney, there’s another way to interpret this—there’s no need to shrink back. To anyone’s eyes, this is clearly contrived. Moreover, according to the servants, several wine bottles had already been uncorked.”
