Grayan retorted sharply, his voice icy cold. His demeanor like this never failed to astonish me—after all, Grayan had always been endlessly gentle toward April and me.

{You don’t need to worry about that. Until April is ready, I can simply sleep within her.}

“…Sleep within her, you say?”

{Yes. I’ll shrink myself down and curl up like a rabbit in its burrow. I swear it won’t cause April the slightest harm.}

Nyx’s words surely weren’t false—spirits couldn’t lie, after all. But “believing” and “reality” were two different things. Just because Nyx believed April would be fine didn’t mean it would actually turn out that way.

“I know you’re speaking the truth. But we can’t possibly predict exactly what will happen if April forms a contract with you, can we?”

Grayan pointed out precisely that flaw. Perhaps because there truly was no fault in his reasoning, Nyx fell silent, offering no further rebuttal.

“…I’d ask you to give up on forming a contract with April. We were unwillingly swept into this labyrinth—please let us leave right away—”

“Kyaang!”

Suddenly, April slipped out of my arms and instantly transformed before our eyes.

In the blink of an eye, she assumed human form and, facing Grayan and me directly, spoke with firm resolve in her voice.

“Duke, Duchess… I wish to form a contract with the Great Spirit.”

…Somehow, I knew this would happen. While Nyx and we were talking, April had been unusually quiet, and it had felt suspicious from the start.
