There aren’t many nobles accustomed to being publicly criticized or denounced before others. Pheon was somewhat used to it, but only because the one condemning him was the Emperor himself—no one dared oppose him, nor could anyone stop him.

But Caella’s case was different. It was all too common for mere maidservants or butlers to scold her and presume to teach her lessons. Even a lowly knight would sometimes mock her. That’s how pitiful the Grand Duchess had become—stripped of everything, left with nothing.

“Your Highness seems concerned only with spending money. Perhaps you should first cultivate the virtues expected of a lady of the house.”

Such remarks would casually slip out whenever she did anything.

“You wicked woman! How dare you try to sell us out!”

She even heard words like that when confined to the tower. Caella had endured every imaginable insult.

They were curses she’d never heard before—so shocking, so horrifying, and so crude she couldn’t even repeat them properly. Thus, she had grown accustomed to them. She’d grown used to the irrational in this irrational place. So Caella wasn’t particularly surprised.

Yet, being accustomed didn’t mean it was alright.

A brief silence passed. Caella offered no defense or rebuttal, and Pheon simply stared at the butler, never turning his gaze toward her.

‘What on earth is going on here?’ Sir Renard, ever perceptive and quick to act, kept glancing anxiously between the Grand Duke and Duchess, wondering if someone ought to speak up. But without the Duke’s permission, he couldn’t step forward recklessly.

“…Is that all?”

After staring at the butler for a long while, the Duke repeated the same question.

“Have you nothing else to present?”

“No… that’s all.”

The butler hesitated slightly before lifting his chin and speaking. He, too, had crossed a river with no turning back.
